Schools for Homosexuals Only

It's not an old news really. There is a school that claimed to be for only gay students in New York. I've been hearing that the school wants to expand itself too. Although I totally support homosexuality, I think having a "gay" school is a little bit too far.

It is understandable that many homosexual teens have to face a lot of harassment from their peers. At the same time, what is the point of having these kids gather in one place? Yes, it might be safer. But this will do harm more than good. When will these teens learn to stand up for themselves if they stick too much to their own kinds? We need variety here. Homosexuality should be something people be aware of and not afraid of. I hope no one will come up with a school for "straight", white, black, or yellow. Maybe those schools do exist somewhere in United States...

Then again, we have religious schools, girls schools, and boys schools. Perhaps a little bit of separation is needed. We already have public school kids being looked down upon by private school students. Do we really need more schools that divide us into certain category even more? Honestly, I am not so sure which one is being discriminated against more between race and homosexuality. At least, people from different race or family background can legally marry each other.

If I were a homophobic, and I find out where the homosexual kids go to school, I'd probably gather my homophobic friends to jump on these gay students. I know that's too extremely. What's even scarier is that there are people out there who would really do it if they get the chance.

Whether you're gay, bi, or straight, you should find ways to stand out and shine to the best of your ability. By blending in or hiding elsewhere won't make our future any better. We need to prove that even if we're homosexuals, we can still be in the same school, same neighborhood, same classroom as heterosexuals without shame or embarrassment.

Here is the one and only decent article I can find regarding this topic (it's quite old too...from 2003):

i don't see the point in a homosexual school either. this is only singling gays out further for those homophobes out there to pit against them. it is only making it more obvious that we are getting to them. homosexuals seperating themselves from heterosexuals is not going to solve anything--it will only increase the problem.

if this nation cannot even agree with itself, how are we going to help other countries??

thanks for this topic, :)

When you least expect it, life throws you a curve--take it and put it straight again.

You have many good points, but you need to get real here about the numbers:

New York City has more than 300,000 high school students. Using the current 5% gay/lesbian figure, that's about 15,000 gay or lesbian students. The school you're talking about, the Harvey Milk High School, has only 110 kids in it!

No one is segregating all the lesbian and gay kids in New York. The school provides a refuge for a few kids who can't be successful or happy elsewhere.

Yes, I understand Harvey Milk High School has only 110 kids. But if the school is trying to expand itself, who knows how many "gay" kids will be accepted. Are the only kids who go there have problems socializing with other teens their age?
