The World's Obsession With Being Offended...

cgvotaw26's picture

Am I the only one that believes the world has become obsessed with being offended?  Regardless of what you write, believe, feel, or express, SOMEBODY is going to inevitably be offended by it!

I want my kids to pray to my Christian God, and I expect them to have the freedom to exercise this right wherever they may be including school and school functions, but if you are an atheist and have children in the same school district, you will most likely be offended by this.

I support the death penalty, but if you don't believe in the death penalty, then you most likely will be offended by my public support of such a "heinous" act.

If an all-black college is constructed with government funding, then white supremacists might be offended because they are not allowed to construct an all-white university due to the unlawful discrimination that would inevitably occur against African-American students.

If a new mother breastfeeds her infant in a public place, there will always be somebody that is offended by her "indecent display" in public where children may see.

If I hang a Rebel flag in my front yard, there will always be somebody that drives by and gasps with shock at my "audacity"!

The list goes on and on of the Versus syndrome battles that the world seems to be overtaken by!  When does it end?  Where do you draw the line?  When will somebody's opinion be recognized as just that...the expression of their own personal beliefs and not a mission to gain the agreement and backing of every other living creature on the face of the earth?

I guess it all depends on what your definition of an offense is. Like you said, there are always people who will disagree and there is nothing that can be done about that. I think what’s important is how you express your opinion and how you react to differing opinions.

That's a very good point, and I agree with you. But when are people going to wake up and realize that there will never be one solitary moment when everybody everywhere will be satisfied with one single matter at hand?

I think most people already realize that but they still decide to voice their opinions and argue them for the sake of trying to get others to understand and to encourage situations that are favorable to their opinions. I hope you understand my run-on sentence...

There is no such thing as a all-black college/or university. If you know of one that only excepts African American students, if there is, I'd like to see it but I doubt it.

Besides that, you make a valid point, it reminded me of the people who are offended by things like Harry Potter O.o

That was simply a hypothetical example of the extreme. I do not know of any all-black institutions; however, the City University of New York's Medgar Evers College does have classes that are available to black male students only.

I have never met or even heard of an atheist who is offended by the fact that Christian kids are not forbidden from praying. I think most fair-minded people would be equally offended by a teacher who tells kids, "I want you all to bow down and pray to my God" as a teacher who would say, "I want everyone to chant together that there is no god."
Kids can quietly pray or not pray in any public school in America when they have a free moment, and nobody stops them from doing so.

Contrare...I believe there was a man who was atheist that sued his daughter's school system because they prayed. Consequently, prayer in that school was prohibited on the account of one non-believer. I'd say a lawsuit represented the man's offense at Christians praying in the public schools, wouldn't you?

And, I agree with you. I don't think a teacher should (or even would, for that matter) tell the students that they had to bow down and pray to his/her God. As a fair-minded and Christian parent myself, I would be unhappy with that situation. But, realistically, that is not what is going on in our schools today. That is not what has everybody in such an uproar about prayer in school. If it were, there'd be no debate or controversy, regardless of what religion the teacher happened to be.
