The Bad Side to Charity

Everyone has seen the various charities that support other countries. Often, people even will donate to these believing they are doing something good. But what is the real result of these charities?
It often appears that the charities that accept donations in the form of objects to be given away and charities that just give money to countries often have an adverse effect on these countries.

First, donating objects floods a country with cheap items. This may not seem bad at first, and in countries that are normally stable and have just suffered a tragedy and need some temporary help, it is a very good thing. But in developing countries, this results in a bad form of competition for local businesses. As a farmer, what is your incentive to farm when the country is flooded with cheap food? As a clothe maker, what will happen when everyone can get cheap donated clothes instead of buying from you? Object donation charities for developing countries are killing these countries businesses!

Second, money donating charities often put the money in the wrong hands. Instead of helping the people, the money will often end up in a corrupt leader's hand, like Mugabe, who spend it on their own wants instead of the needs of their country. Even when the charity has ear-marked the money, it does not stop the corrupt official from taking it. After all, it is their country, who is going to stop them? This type of charity is doing nothing more than supporting corrupt regimes in unstable countries.

Third, not every charity is really what they seem. Many charities, such as Convoy of Hope, will only give in return for something like religious conversion. Many are also either run by dominionist groups, are affiliated with them, or supported by them. Unfortunately, even Salvation Army has issues. They have fought initiatives which require them to offer benefits to partners of gay/les/bi/trans individuals. Likewise, it is acting more church than charity by firing workers with different beliefs.

The website below has some good information on which charity groups are dominionist-supporting or have used coercion tactics. Likewise, it lists other charities which do not do this sort of thing.
