I just finished the movie "Donnie Darko" less than three hours ago and still it creeps me out. Yet, it is a kind of creepiness that I seem to enjoy and want to experience over and over again. The movie is creepy, scary, funny, and twisted, basically a dark comedy meets a family movie meets a drama meets an intellectual adventure. There is so much depth involved and I like how the creators decided to present excerpts from the chapters in the time-travel book at the beginning of each chapter in the movie. The only letdown is that the entire story that develops over nearly two hours ends up only being a dream in which he only had less than a month to live. I also liked Frank, the man-sized rabbit, and the chick Donnie hooks up with seems really cerebral. This movie certainly has skyrocketed into my top ten fav. movies.
This summer, I put forth a challenge to myself. I assembled a list of 20 movies I haven't seen (with the help of one of my friends), and challenged myself to watch them before September. The list contains some oldies, some newies, some classics, and some that even the creators try to forget. Here's to hoping I reach my goal and finish the list before September 1st. Here is the list:
1) Donnie Darko, 2) The Life Aquatic, 3) Blade Runner, 4) Spinaltap, 5) EZ Rider, 6) The Notebook, 7) Dr. Strangelove, 8) Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, 9) Fast Times at Richmont High, 10) American Graffiti, 11) Hollywood Knights, 12) Major League, 13) Casino Royale (original with Woody Allen), 14) Galaxy Quest, 15) Hunt For Red October, 16) American Werewolf in London, 17) Oh Brother Where Are Thou, 18) 300 Spartans, 19) Apocalypse Now, 20) Beetle Juice
With one down, I'm looking to rent and watch The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou by the end of this week.

I found it to be a lot deeper than I had expected.
Good call on making a list!
I've done the exact same thing - with the help of a group of friends and IMDB, we've assembled a Sunday Night movie list. Being in college over the summer semester, we have plenty of time to burn...plus it's cheap and keeps us out of the bars.
A few movies you might want to consider (that you may have not seen) - not so much based on cinematic quality, but more importantly the overall stories/messages involved, are:
A River Runs Through It
Triumph of the Will
Black Robe
The Fast Runner
City of God
Before the Rain
Monsoon Wedding
Shower
West Beirut
Mama Africa
Rabbit Proof Fence
I can guarantee you won't like them all, but check out the synopses and see if one or two strike your eye.
Happy watching!!

It's just a really good movie. And the girls did a great job, for their first acting experience.

I also saw Donnie Darko. That movie left the combined feelings of sadness and creepiness....though I thought it was a good movie too. Deep on a level that not all people can accept anymore.
