Okay, we all get the message, right?
Piracy is bad, it's illegal, and people frown on you for it.
Anyone here not understand what this means?
I don't buy pirated movies; I don't download music or movies. I have my own reasons for this. I'm weird, I know. But I like the CD and DVD cases (and they fit so nicely into my DVD shelves and the drawers in my entertainment center).
But I can't help but feel as though I'm being punished for buying authentic DVDs.
The other day, my husband and I were walking through Wal-Mart and we saw that the entire Star Wars series was on sale for about $9.00 a piece: all collector's edition widescreen versions! Well, I grew up on Star Wars, and I had never seen Episode 3 (It came out when I was flat broke and feeling anti-theater). So we bought them, looking forward to the day that we could lounge and watch all six in order, and lose ourselves in the Force.
And what did we get?
Anti-Piracy ads that we can't skip, can't fast forward through, and are forced to sit through.
Shouldn't the fact that we bought the DVDs be enough to show that we know we aren't supposed to pirate these movies?
Apparently not.
I don't mind sitting through commercials on television, or even seeing the occasional pop-up anti-piracy ad on the Internet. But I am about sick of being forced to sit through these condescending anti-piracy ads that are on every single legally-bought DVD I own. So now I am wondering, how effective are these ads, any way?
Here is an ad I found tonight...
How effective is this in deterring people from pirating movies? From what I understand, pirated movies don't have these ads on them. Seems to me like they are going overboard, and making themselves a target for fun-making and spoofs:
Is anyone taking these things seriously? More importantly, are the people these ads are trying to target taking them seriously?

If I could afford to buy all the DVDs I wanted, I would (I like the pretty boxes and artwork). I usually by the DVDs I have used, blockbuster wanted 21 bucks for 1 movie (I went there yesterday)! Screw that, I'd rather get it off of half.com or something. But I hate that disclaimer too, but as far as DVDs goes I almost never buy from the shops (ie: best buy, walmart, etc, etc), unless it's REALLY cheap or I get a gift card from someone.I think itunes has some of the worse colections (for exception of a few), maybe if they would get more music and movies (not just the popular stuff). The TV shows are decently priced though but they don't have a wide selection.I'll stop rambling.:)

I'm sorry. I assumed you'd make the connection. E-bay is legal. Thus, half.com is legal. Students buy textbooks from half.com all the time. Why don't you take a look at the site? http://www.half.ebay.com/ It's just like amazon and e-bay and all the other online merchants. It's legal.

You are definitely not alone. Hubby is a huge movie fan so I try to get him a new DVD every week or so and all of the new ones have the same ad. It drives me insane to have to sit through the anti-piracy "You wouldn't steal a car, You wouldn't steal a wallet" bs. Those of us buying the legit copies already know that (as do most that are buying the pirated copies). Preaching to the choir is wasting time.

Can't you just fast forward through them? I never tried.

Most of the time, you can't skip or fast forward through the anti-piracy ads on a DVD. Most of my DVDs won't even let me hit to go to the main menu until after all those ads have played.

I pirate music mostly because I can't find it in stores. So, like all my vices, I have to come up with a self-righteous cause to go along with it: anti-IP! I've been against the idea of intellectual property for about a year now, and let me tell you, it feels great!
I'm actually thinking about having a piracy party: everybody brings their laptops and a flash drive and dresses like a swashbuckler and we spend the night loading each others' music onto our hard drives.

what is intellectual property and why is it so bad? Are you supporting sharing everything? Wouldn't that make us communist?

Intellectual Property covers a range of things from copyright law, trademark law, and patent law. By legitimizing intellectual property as an actual private entity, the government creates monopolies by privatizing ideas, limiting competition and therefore limiting growth.
With intellectual property, you don't have to be the best at what you do; you just have to be the first.

Keep an eye out for the new FAQ and Topic of the Week, coming this fall!
The music and movie industry have been robbing us blind for years. I personally have no sympathy for the industry, I'm only interested in the music. Industry has no interest in the music or musician beyond product and profit. Most musicians that I know are the very people with the largest MP3 collections.
As for the movie industry, they make tens of millions off movies, while simultaneously ensuring that most of the money invested in new movies goes to the lowest common denominator bullshit for dummies movies that secure places at the cinema.
Most of the movies I've downloaded are movies that I would never buy anyway, and wouldn't pay to watch. So it makes no ends to the industry whether I download em or not, either way they wouldn't see a penny. I still go to the cinema and still rent DVDs.
People who buy pirate DVDs off people on the street are generally just lazy technophobes.

I have a question. I have asked this on yahoo and google but no one knows the answer. If I watch movies on cinecast or any other website is that illegal? If I don't download or "share" or upload is it illegal and what are the penalties? Does anyone have any links about the legality of this issue?

I don't have a link;
But I would imagine as long as that site is covered to broadcast the movie, you're fine.
In those cases, you're not doing anything wrong, so they can't go after you at all. But if the website isn't cleared to broadcast the movie they can get shut down and fined a boatload if they get caught.

(sigh) Half the people I have been asking say that it is and have say that it isn't. Where can I get proof/documentation of punishments or if its a crime, short of calling 911-although I doubt that they know. Its funny, we have this nationwide problem and no one knows whether its legal or not. A blogger responded saying this. any comments?

Legal precedent is inconclusive at this point. The actions being tried are civil rather than criminal so far. Even a hosting site itself is sheilded under safe harbor provisions of the DNCA if they promptly comply and 'take down' content at copyright holders request. As a casual viewer of clips on YouTube there is very little chance of any liability. If you are the uploader then they may be after you.
Although you do not think you are downloading a copy of a streamed clip there is a good chance one is stored on your computer. If law enforcemant has a reason to confiscate the PC and look they will find it.
cinecast is a site linked with malware. You might want to be sure you anti-virus and anti spyware scans are up to date if you are using the site.

Okay, this is how I learned about it when I was working in radio... Try to think of it this way.
Radio stations are covered by the FCC, and have alicense to broadcast, right? So they broadcast music, commercials, PSAs, and whatever else.
Restaurants do not have a license to broadcast. So restaurants that play radio stations over their large sound systems (where it carries throughout the entire restaurants, not just on a small radio) are technically breaking the law. That's why so many restaurants have their own little network, with no commercials (usually).
But, people sitting in a restaurant trying to eat when the FCC discovers that the restaurants is broadcasting a radio station don't get sued for illegally listening to the station.
It's the same thing, basically. Even if some clip of the movie is stored in your temporary files, you can't get in trouble unless you re-broadcast that clip. Clearing your temporary files will delete that clip.
And, I do agree with ChillBill, make sure your anti-virus/anti-spyware softwares are up to date when you try to watch videos on any site - especially if you're using broadband or hi-speed Internet.
