Think before you pink

Recently while completing an assignment for a class I came across some information I found disturbing.  That many things that we use- including deodorant contain chemicals called  parabens and phthalates, which recent studies indicate may be linked to cancer development.  My daughters and I have systematically run through every product in the house and have thrown these items.  I am apalled that even though these above mentioned results are not completely definitive, more warning should be provided or the products should not be used at all.  It seems to me that it does not good to research and treat breast cancer or any cancer for that matter, and all the while men and women continue using these products with no idea of what they might be doing.

There was a page that listed all of the products the www.thinkbeforyoupink.prg group had tested but the site has been embargoed. Here is a link that describes recent studies on the subject: http://www.thinkbeforeyoupink.org/Pages/RecentStudies.html

  • Parabens are chemical preservatives that have been identified as estrogenic and disruptive of normal hormone function. (Estrogenic chemicals mimic the function of the naturally occurring hormone estrogen, and exposure to external estrogens has been shown to increase the risk of breast cancer.)
  • Phthalates are known to cause a broad range of birth defects and lifelong reproductive impairments in laboratory animals that are exposed to these chemicals during pregnancy and after birth. Phthalates are also known to be hormone-mimicking chemicals, many of which disrupt normal hormonal processes, raising concern about their implications for increased breast cancer risk.
