Why I Fell in Love...

with Korean Drama...

I think I would have to say that I fell for K-drama because I’m a girl. I hope there isn’t a guy on progressiveu who loves Korean dramas because I don't mean to make you feel awkard, this is just my opinion.

I mean to say that it is definitely for agashis and ahjummas (girls and older women)

FEMALES (that is the majority that watches them in SKorea and they are targeted toward women)

I know you might be curious as to WHY? BECAUSE……........

It’s romantic, emotional, sensitive…ridiculously outrageous…it is family oriented, mixed with love stories, of breaking up and getting back together--of falling down and picking yourself up.

Some even have the guts to address homosexuality, abortion and sex ( k-drama is becoming MODERN and PROGRESSIVE)

It is life and death. I know…I’ve seen it (these things) in American shows on NBC, ABC, CBS, or CW (WB) etc. I loved me some FRIENDS, Will and Grace, My favorite for a long time has been Fresh Prince of Bel Air

  BUT…I can’t help it; I can’t stop myself from enjoying k-drama.

I fell in love with foreign dramas. It started with K-drama, now I love j-doramas. I do occasionally watch mandarin c-dramas. But I always come back to watch an interesting k-drama that gets subbed.

Ah…I’ll explain myself and tell you why I fell in love—obsessively and deeply (He he..., it happens) with K-dramas and its actors.  How come I also Love the sound track for these k-dramas?

I have to reveal that these dramas were my shining light when I was deeply depressed. There was a period of few months, in 2006, when I did not come out from my room except for using the bathroom and getting food. OH, I was planning my demise. It sounds silly? I know. I was just sick and fed up of and with life, and the unfairness of it all. I couldn’t face reality and wanted to live in fantasy.

Money woes and Family troubles, Life’s a bitch as you know

I want to share about myself by giving people an idea of my silly passion and hobby. I want to write another blog on K-drama being progressive. Believe me- IT IS. I’ll show you how and why when I’m finished writing that, I  wish, convincing blog.

It is tiring to love K-drama. I don’t speak Korean…I have to wait for the shows to be subtitled and be put up for download by kind souls or I’d have to rent them from a Korean place and that would involve trying to communicate in Korean and I only know basic words and have no idea how to form sentences.

The first k-drama that I watched was Full House. NOT the show with the Olsen twin. This is the one that was made in 2004 with the Korean singer Rain and with gorgeous actress Song-Hye Kyo.

Ah, let me tell you- awkward love story. He is a singer star in real life and he has to act as a celebrity in the drama while she is a poor unskilled author who encounters him through a chance coincidence because he buys her house from her friends without her knowledge.   If you’re interested in a better summary, click http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Full_House

OH, I was attached and liked it but I can tell that it was not a great drama. I looked at it from a very critical eye -- it had a happy ending and the acting was good, even though the script was not too outstanding.

Most K-dramas only have about 16-24 episodes. I like this format. I know it’s heartless for some dramas to end so soon, believe me that when you watch a really good drama…you don’t want it to end. But it is better that it ends and not drag.

ALL good things come to an end and I dread the last episodes of some k-dramas but I deal with it. I had an especially hard time watching the last episode of Coffee Prince, http://wiki.d-addicts.com/The_1st_Shop_of_Coffee_Prince

It is fiction, meant to entertain and enlighten but it has to come to an end some time.

I have to say that K-drama has taught me a lot about Korean culture. I have learned an immense load of stuff about the people, their values and their way of life. OH…I know Korean words too. What I need to do now is to try and actually learn the language through a course or book.

I’m thinking that I want to travel and visit South Korea and if I have enough money, I’ll go to Japan. I even learned history of Korea and Japan and their iffy/somehow tense relationship.

with Korean soaps too! They bought the sheet music and everything, from this one called Winter Sonata. They used to have weekly Korean soap parties... It's about to start makin' me watch some too. From what I quickly glimpsed, they're beautifully shot, modern-looking, the actors/ actresses are gorgeous, and the music's pretty nice...

Wow I need an escape too maybe I'll hit them up for some DVDs.

it's a love story, purely- and although I like the story, I didn't watch that one because it was a typical kdrama (love story with complications) and it's old (2002) http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Winter_Sonata

you have to watch the more recent ones like Coffee Prince and Scandal in the Capital
they are done very nicely, the story, the acting and the topics too...superb

Well, to me...all Asians dramas promote love relationships more than sex relationships. That's one of the reasons why I watch them. I'm even addicted to anime. How can they express love and friendships so well when many Western movies can't even bring an emotion to me? That's just my opinion though.

Oh, and they have great story lines. lol So creative...

But it was getting so that I could tell the plot before even the 10th episode
it was like a formula, rich guy/poor girl, girl falls ill, he tries to save her, it might or might not be a happy ending---
Ah, they've moved up from that formula and are making interesting and captiviating tales that I can totally immerse myself into and actually feel the emotions and dialogue speaking to me as if they were REAL

Me & my boyfriend love watching Japanese / Chinese / Korean movies. They're the same way as the series are, but a little more quicker, haha. I love how they're more humanly than American movies.

Be careful with your spelling... I know that you don't speak Korean, but here's one of the "correct" romanizations: "ajumma" [cos you don't put an h before the j]

picking up words that I hear repeatedly...I know if i put in more effort, I will be able to learn it properly ...I'm thinking about it, BUT thanks for the correction.
I have a lot of respect for people who translate/romanize and sub all the k- and j- dramas AND Movies too. I know it's a tough and long process.

Death Note anyone? I loved it...But I also liked this other japanese movie that was given the title Nobody Knows [in english] (I cried a lot while watching that)
From K-movies, I watch some of the originals of the horror ones that get redone by America and I also like some other ones...200 lbs beauty comes to mind. I wanted to watch a couple...I always get distracted by the dramas (I watch them too much)
I've been meaning to watch the one with Rain (Bi) in it...I'm a Cyborg but it's OK...among others such as The Host and Hwang Jini
