A few days ago I wrote a post entitled, Next my school will block Progressive U, then a fellow blogger wrote a response post, or what I believe was a response post, to this entitledThe New Sex Education. Instead of replying directly to this post through comments, I thought it might be easier to create an entirely new post. In the first part of her post she states that people who really want to check their blogs can check them off of their cell phones. First of all, contrary to popular belief, most cell phones to do not have the capability to check sites like those. There is way to much content and detail for cell phones to handle, unless you have some high tech cell phone, which most students do not...especially if you do not have a labtop or computer to access these sites outside of school in the first place.  Plus, even those cell phones that do have the ability to do so take too long to load the sites. Not to mention it costs outrageous amonts to have the internet on your cell phone-it cost an average of twenty dollars a month; more than it costs for most people to have full internet use at home.

Secondly, we were never allowed to blog during school in the first place. Some people did, well alot of people did, but it was really hard to because our librarian is a blog-Nazi. Anyone caught using one of these sites during school hours was banned from using the computers at school during school hours for the rest of the nine week period. People were usiong these sites before and after school, which was allowed. Also, especially at the college level, there should be plently of computers for everyone. I know my campus (the college I am attending next year- and I visit quite frequently to use their massive library) has 7 computer labs with about 50 computers each in them---and they are never all in use. Not to mention a lot of apartment complexes have buisness centers with computers you can use.

Thirdly, while younger generations may be at risk for meeting "weirdos" online because they are chatting, high schoolers should know about internet safety. And if they do not, then there is nothing the schoool can due to help them at this point to get this point across, short of gathering the school together for a "internet safety assembly." I hope this clarified what I originally meant in my blog the first time. This was not meant as a put down to any other bloggers, but simply as clarification of the situation in our school and area in particular.

I don't think it would help curtail their decision if you pointed out the academic purpose of many here at this site: a scholarship for college.

And while I want to also avoid putting down people, assuming that everyone can check their blogs on their cell phone would imply that everyone has money to spend and even has a cell phone. The latter is becoming more of a reality. Its a new "necessity" of modern life. Hell, I have one myself, but thats because I don't have a land line or private internet access.

Public internet access is the only way I blog here or do any of my scouring, devouring of news.

Oh and congratulations about being spotlighted by the way. :-)

You don't appear as I would have imagined you'd appear. But, this has always been the case with me when I finally see the face of a musician, lecturer, writer, author, blogger that I haven't seen before. I never seem to get it right or close with anyone at all.

Schools are there for education, and if something is taking away from the educational development of students, then they are entitled to ban it. I hate that they have to ban Myspace, YouTube, Xanga, LiveJournal, etc. but most of the kids on the computers are taking up space for kids who actually need it to do homework. Yes, the kids will do it at home, but that's their choice. The school can't do anything about what goes on at home. That's the parents job. The school CAN do something about what goes on in its own walls though.
