A Commendable Effort by the Saudi King

So as it is my habit to read NY times almost everyday…thanks to the free papers for everyone at my college, I want to share one of the cover stories on the front page. It is actually not about any bombings or people killed in the Middle East but about an effort by the Saudi King Abdullah to build a “ginormous” university complex in Jiddah.

His highness of Saudi Arabia has finally realized that the region (Muslim countries) is lacking in top-notch research institutions, where things are done on a scale worth world-wide recognition.

Well, I am glad that something of this magnitude is being thought of by the Saudi King to make a difference in the educational atmosphere of the country.

I think the effort is a rather expensive, extensive and liberal one BUT one has to begin somewhere for change to come about in that narrow minded society of Saudi Arabia.

The thing that is special about this university is that it will be a lot more modern in thinking and application than the current ones of Saudi Arabia. It will not be an institution hindered by the religious extremism of the country that limits free thinking and coeducation.

“Its planners say men and women will study side by side in an enclave walled off from the rest of Saudi society, the country’s notorious religious police will be barred and all religious and ethnic groups will be welcome in a push for academic freedom and international collaboration sure to test the kingdom’s cultural and religious limits.
This undertaking is directly at odds with the kingdom’s religious establishment, which severely limits women’s rights and rejects coeducation and robust liberal inquiry as unthinkable. ”

At the same time though there are things that people in Saudi Arabia, other university professors and experts, are skeptical about. I mean they like the idea but they want to know that will it actually change Saudi Arabian educational landscape and involve their own students and professors too, or is this university to cater to outsiders only. They want this to be a place for people of Saudi origin can also come and work where there are no religious hindrances for their scientific endeavors or socializing between the sexes is not banned.

I praise the King for supporting this cause for open minded educational establishment that his religious supporters (the extremely religious ones) are at odds with. I hope he realizes that slowly the country needs to become more accepting of the ideals of equal rights for the sexes and that coeducation and sharing of opinions, ideas and socializing between the sexes is NOT at odds with our religion.

I think traditions and beliefs are what need to be changed in Saudi Arabia. There are numerous people who do not agree with the current religious views that limit such things as the right for women to drive or students to be able to sit in classrooms without partition between males and females (the classrooms in public Saudi Universities have separate doors for women and men and they are also somehow divided --personally, I don’t know how as I haven’t come across this in Pakistan).

This university that is being built will be through private endeavors that are supported by the government too but the money will be supplied by different organizations. Slowly, change is on the way, I HOPE and PRAY!!!

Yeah, SO…I am glad to read of this hopeful endeavor being undertaken in Saudi Arabia for education and research. Seriously, I hope they succeed in making it a university that does make an impact on the world and on the Saudi people too, so that they realize they have to keep up with progressive and modern ideas of this century.

This is promising, but at the same time I wonder how can anyone feel free to speak inside the compound when they can be arrested for speaking outside of the walls.
I imagine, for example, a classroom in which one student doesn`t believe that Muhammad is a prophet and is considering Christianity, one student is gay and explains this to other students during a class break, one does a class presentation on the merits of evolutionary theory and one has aspirations to become a Saudi police officer.
What`s to stop the one who someday becomes a police officer from arresting the others once they are outside the walls some day...
I love the idea of this being a start, but I just wonder how anyone, at least the Saudi students, can really feel free to speak until the society outside changes... because that`s what they have to face someday when they leave those walls.

things that are the norm, especially as the religious extreme is always trying to justify itself by the strict/literal interpretations of Islam (the Saudi sect is called Wahabi)
that are not actually what rest of the Muslim world agrees with. in the 21st century

My point is that I can see that Saudi People are open to change and hopefully the religious establishment can realize that they don't have to lose their morals or religion to bring themself into a progressively modern society where open mindedness is not banned.

ALSO, education is the foremost way to liberate and change minds and societies and I hope that students at the university can spread what they experience and learn inside the walls to the outside world,
This is of course going to take time but it is the best investment for a brighter future for the coming generations

Nicely written. It's nice to see some hopefulness for a change. I don't mean from you in particular, but in general. I've been preoccupied lately with how the thought that the thrust of modernity has been translated into hand over fisted capitalism in every endeavor the US, Brittan (the West) and who ever else we can get to buy into our scheme, gets involved in. The rush to modernize has created a lot more harm than it has good, so it isn't hard for me to understand the hubris with which fundamental minded people view us.

The middle east is the cradle of knowledge and I hope that this new university will kindle a renaissance of...., well, I'll just say that I'm willing to bet that for all of it's thoroughness and effort, the modern body of knowledge is lacking some essential details.

I've become a pessimist, it's just that everything that happens always makes me sad especially what is happening in most of the Muslim world and I really did hope that something like this for education and research would happen in that region and SAudi Arabia actually has the means to support such an endeavor...oil companies there are making money :)
and to put that money to such a great investment as education is fantastic :)
I hope it does bring about a change and open mindedness and acceptance of ideas...

Sometimes the most we can do is hope for the best. Even if anyone knew the best answer to problems larger than just their own community, they have the large obstacle of getting the right people and enough people to listen to them.

In the mean time I think you will make it a long way. So keep hope.

I want to become a part of society that actually works to change it, right now, I don't drive or have money because I am too busy and tired with school to work, but I have a couple of ideas of how I could start to work towards the goals of making a difference

In any case, one of my professors reminded me that it is always the darkest before sunrise (dawn) and therefore I should not get lost in the darkness that I feel surrounds me now, but wait for light to slowly seep throught to let everyone else see ..or, something to that extent.....
I am working on becoming more pro positive action.

I'm glad too. The Arabic world has been known in ancient history for it's advanced arithmatic and medicine. Now they have a chance to do it again.
