Is Valentine’s Day a Waste of Time? Who really benefits from this holiday- couples who spend money on gifts for each other, singles that find themselves lonely, restaurants that raise prices and have two hour wait times, or stores that charge $20 for poorly made, over-sized teddy bears. At one point or another, I’m sure we all have stayed in a relationship that we were ready to get out of just so we wouldn’t be ALONE on Valentine’s Day or just so we could receive a GIFT- how ridiculous is that. I guess the concept of “A day of Love” is nice- but it sounds a little too lovey dovey for my taste. A normal V-Day consists of spending countless hours doing my hair and make up, $80 to get my hands, toes, and eyebrows done, $150 to buy an outfit for the day, $5 for a Hallmark Card, and $200s on a chocolate, roses, stuffed animals, and other gifts that might or might not be used after the holiday is over. Valentine’s Day obligates you to spend time with your loved one and if you’re single causes you to think about how lonely you are.
My fiancé and I went to dinner at the Cheesecake Factory and the wait time was more than two hours. So what did we do during that time- drink, drink, and drink more. This holiday suckers you into feeling like you should have a nice dinner- so we did. 6 Martinis and 4 Mai Tai’s later we got seated. A normal dinner for two would have been about $40 but because of our long wait and need to entertain ourselves we ended up with a lovely $159 bill.
I think Valentine’s Day is over-rated. We should think about loving each other ALL THE TIME not just for some holiday. Stop putting money into the pockets of people that MADE the holiday and save the money to pay of your bills- I heard the average family has something like $8,000 in debt. DON’T ADD TO IT!!!!!!!!!!

Well, it is commercialized, just like most things in this country. The original idea was to celebrate love, but since in our country love is associated with diamond rings and other expensive things of that sort, the need to impress arises, thus getting people to spend. Of course, the corporations like hallmark benefit from this greatly.
