When the sun...

Cheezmaestro's picture

When the sun leans down and kisses the earth,
The snow melts like ice before a hearth,
The earth had lain beneath a veil of lace,
Waiting for her groom to lift it and kiss her face,
Now the waiting is over and Spring has come,
Winter has been banished by a glorious sun.

That was a little poem I just wrote on the spot, cuz while the page was loading I looked up from the screen and out of the window. The Sun was shining brightly, reflected by the snow. But I knew that the snow would melt and this was the beginning of Spring because I hadn't seen the sun in many weeks. Here in Kiev, Ukaine it's been foggy for the entire Winter so whenever there comes along a day where the sun escapes the clouds and shines, it's so refreshing.

Unfortunately, this means that I'm going to have to slosh through melting snow now, but I'm used to it by now. I'm in a sixteenth floor apartment and the view I have from my window is a beautiful panoramic shot of the city. That's about as close as I want to go though cuz most parts of Kiev are generally dirty and grimy, interlaced with old, Soviet style apartments. Only the main tourist spots are kept up. That would include much of downtown, which, I will admit, is beautiful.

You can be walking down one of the small streets there, surrounded by old architecture, and suddenly the strains of a chamber music orchestra will start drifting down from one of the charming 1800's buildings. Or you might find a special treat when you turn a corner and find yourself in front of the rebuilt St. Nicholas Cathedral, where, if you're lucky, an organ concert is being held that night. (Little known fact: Every church organ is built custom for the building it's going to go in because it uses the whole building as an extension of itself.)(Also: an organ player must play for at least 24 hours on the organ before a concert because every organ's different.) I was informed upon these things by an organist who was watching the show with me. He asked where I was from and I said America. He told me that he was going to be doing a tour in the U.S. and that I should come to one of his concerts. Unfortunately I couldn't but through that whole episode, I received a glimpse of a little known subculture. You always hear of famous violin players and famous guitar and piano players, but this was the first time that I got to hear about any famous organ players. Very interesting...

Basically, I'm glad the sun's out!
