Why are some people teaching when it is clear they don't want to be there?

So I have a statistics class that begins at 8:00am and I have a bad habit of not getting to school on time.  My professor has this rule that if you are more than 5 minutes late not to show up to class until 9:00am during the break.  Now for me, I am usually 10-15, maybe 20 minutes late but no later and with this new rule I am now missing half of the class which turns out to be the most important half.  I understand that he is trying to get his students to come to school on time but he also put this rule in effect because he gets distracted when people walk in during the lecture.  In my opinion, he should not being thinking about himself and make it so the students can be in class and learn, no matter what time it is.  This just goes to show the lack of interest the professors and teachers posses in our society.  Yes, there are some good teachers who really love their job and want to teach but some people just shouldn't be teaching. Where do the schools get these people? Isn't there some sort of screening process they go through?

I dislike it when someone walks in late to class especially because the professor will generally repeat everything he said. which wastes my time and everyone else who was on time. I would say set your alarm clock on the other side of the roomm so when it goes off you have to get up to turn it off. or next semester get your classes at a later time.

Agreed. Of course, there have been times i've been late for reasons beyond my control (my tire went flat while driving and I had to change it-i missed half the class.) But I hate how there is this one guy who is always late to the math class I'm in. I'm in Calc 1 and having him come in 15-20 minutes late daily to a 50 min. class is really distracting. What gets me even more is we just had a test (which most everyone bombed) and he wanted to throw a fit that there were 60 pts he should have gotten or more on that test, and after talking to the instructor he was adding 8 pts on. That still was not good enough for him!! Sometimes I wish he would lock the door on this guy because he starts asking questions that he would know if he'd been there the first 20 min. besides, students can leave if the instructor is 15 min. late, there should be something like that about students being late.

I would be highly frustrated if I was in a Calculus class and someone was distracting me everyday. Why would the instructor add anything at all? It is not the instructors fault for that guy for being later. It sounds like this guy is making excuses and his parents are paying his way through school so he will just party until he has a liver diease.

They can not do anything about students being late because they are paying for their education. They are paying so their shouldn't be any rules. You should find out if this guy gets scholarships or grants for his education. I would report it if I was you.

Understandable... in college you are paying for your education, but at the same time, if you don't show for a test, the instructor is fully within his/her rights to not allow you to take it without compelling reason (i.e. you were sick (in which you should have contacted the instructor beforehand or before returning), had an emergency, etc.). and at one point while said late asshole was taking everyone else's time to argue his grade, i told him he should be happy he got any extra points at all and that maybe if he were on time and showed that he really was interested in his education the instructor might be more lenient... all i got was an eyeroll worthy of a valley girl. all it was missing was a 'puh-leeze' lol.

My suggestion is not to blame the instructor for your inability to arrive on time. Quite honestly, if you can't make it to school on time, how are you ever going to function in the workplace. If you were employed by me and were consistently late, then you would be fired. That doesn't mean I hate my job and should find a new one. It makes me an effective boss. As with your instructor, your inability to arrive on time for his class doesn't make him a bad instructor or someone who should give up teaching. I suggest you make a plan to get out of bed earlier and get motivated quicker.

I agree with how some teachers teach because it's their job and not their passion. But your example is lacking. Your arriving late to class does not reflect how your professor is not passionate about his career at all. Perhaps you should choose another example to prove your point.
