The New Driving Distraction

For a long time, if you were caught talking on a cell phone, you would be fined. Teens today have found a way to get past this rule. Texting. While this is a lass obvious way to communicate, it can be just as/more than dangerous. When you text, you may have to look at the phone, but when you read texts, you do. Texting should be fined even more than calls because it is more detremental to a driver. For those who do not know, 5 cheerleaders were killed because the driver was text messaging. There was another incident where a boy texting killed an innocent man. Is this something we should allow? absolutely not! texting is fine when you are doing other things, but you should NOT text while in a car, no matter how good you think you are at texting or driving. This is ridiculous and I think that it is ludicrous that something so stupid and what i think to be common sense would cause deaths.

Last year two local men were killed in a car accident, one of the few survivors was the driver at fault. As you can guess, the accident happened because the man was texting. Whats worse, while the EMTs were trying to save the two men's lives, and the police questioned the driver, the infamous texter continued on texting. Last I heard the man was being charged with two counts of man slaughter.

Thats terrible. I can't believe the man didn't even feel guilty. That IS murder

I one hundred percent agree with you. To text while driving is rediculious, as a teenager I find myself ashamed that teenagers would do something as dumb as texting while driving. I would defiantly vote to have a law passed against texting while driving.

You have a good point, but how on earth will we catch these people and take the new law into action? We can see people talking on phones, yes. But when you are texting, no on ecan see that. Sure, you look down, but many people do that when they are searching for something in their bag, etc. And when they are pulled over, you really think anyone can prove that they were texting?

well, if you are arrested for reckless driving, they could check your phone and see if the accident or reckless driving was at the same time that you recieved or answered a text message.

JuliaP's picture

Exactly. Thats what some one told me today. If an accident occurs, after the scene they can check from the cell phone records and see at approximately what time the phone was used. Good thinking!

Me too, and i think that if you are in an acident while texting that you should have more action taken against you than if you were caught talking.

JuliaP's picture

Totally. Thats reckless driving. it should be treated like DUI

downheartedpink's picture

i agree

JuliaP's picture

remind me again, what is so scary about taking over the driver's seat while the driver texts?

Spiff's picture

I don't know if you guys have run into this, but have you ever been in the passenger seat, and the driver asks you to take the wheel while they text? Scares the bejeezes out of me.

Yes, but at least they have someone watching the road....i guess. lol

Poetry_wave's picture

No that would be insainly scary. I would defiantly say no and then probly lecture them about it, but that is just me being the insian super safe driving person I am.

JuliaP's picture

I personally don't see whats wrong with that. Its a good thing that they aren't texting and driving at the same time isn't it? Unless they ask you to drive and you don't have a license/permit

i can't even wrap my head around the fact that people think it's okay to not be looking at the road pretty much 100% of the time while the car is moving.

i do talk on my phone if i have to (but kind of like "i'll be home soon" or "do you need anything while i'm at the store" calls, not "tell me your life story as i careen down the highway" kind of calls) and to be perfectly honest i do text in the car too, but only if i'm stopped at a light or something...as soon as that light turns green my phone is put away; the last thing i need is to get into an accident from doing something so ridiculously stupid.

I still find that distracting though. You could miss a green light while texting or a pedestrian and instinctly "go" at green without previously observing surroundings

that I text message when I drive. And I have thought the exact same thoughts about having some sort of legislature restricting texting while driving. I know that I'm a complete contradiction with regards to this subject. There was one good point made... not all the 'texters' will be 'caught'.. there's just no way. I think alternatives need to be implemented. We live in the age of technology, why cant' there be a voice activated system for text messaging for this very issue? I'm sure it can be done.

well, at least you are honest about it. that just goes to show that even people who know what they are doing still do it. It isnt just cheerleaders and people like that. it is a real problem

JuliaP's picture

Actually there is. Its just not "out" yet. I heard some people talking about how they tested a product, cell phone, and when you speak, the words appear on screen and then you can send. Isn't that cool? I wonder how long till that comes out.

Since you text while you drive I guess you can trust yourself to be safe. How do you feel when you see others do the same?

downheartedpink's picture

that is pretty cool. i want one of those!

I talk on my phone while driving, but i have personalized ringtones for every number in my phone so i don't have to look at my phone to see who is calling. I also have blue tooth for my phone so i don't have to have the phone up to my ear. BUT i would never txt while driving that just asking for a accident, and i'm appalled to hear that not just teens but that anyone would even thinkof txting while driving.

Spiff's picture

On my way to work today, I passed a police officer at an intersection...he was texting. really quite quaint wouldn't you say?

this is really funny, but sad. People in charge of enforcing the law should set an example. but that is really ironic isnt it?

JuliaP's picture

Now THAT is scarier than taking over the wheel while your friend texts

jmathews5's picture

how funny that you caught that... I'm wondering if you chuckled.

JuliaP's picture

i wouldn't chuckle. i would be so scared and shocked
