Sexuality in Politics

It is so funny to see how famous politicians put themselves into vulnerable position in front of the public, especially when it comes to a topic about their sexuality. Senator Craig, Mark Foley and James McGreevey are examples of politicians who falls under such phenomenon.

James McGreevey was a Democratic Governor of New Jersey who came out to the public that he was homosexual in Mid-November 2004. Apparently, he had an affair with one of his employee who I believe was one of his body guards. Mark Foley was a Republican member of United States House of Representatives. There was a scandal about him sending sexual instant messages to his 16 to 17 years old pages. In those private messages with his pages, Foley constantly repeated references to sexual activities and organs to the boys...which I thought was a little bit messed up. Lastly, Senator Craig who claimed that he is not gay, never been gay and will never be gay after he got caught playing footsie with a policeman at an airport bathroom stall. I thought it was hilarious! (I tried doing that with a friend in the school's bathroom for fun...I found out it's pretty hard to reach to another person's stall without stretching. And I mean really stretching). Anyway, Foley and McGreevey already dismissed themselves from their former positions. As for Senator Craig, who knows. I doubt he'll come back though.

Now, after comparing these three people, I realize they have one thing in common. It's as if they are ashamed of their sexuality. Would things turn out differently if these three did not hide their sexuality until their allegations occurred? For Senator Craig, even though he's not gay, it does not mean that straight men don't do things with each other. They do, in secret of course. This is probably one of those things that people don't want to know and don't want to care. But I think we should be aware of these things instead of keeping us naive all the time. Sexuality does play huge part in our politics and society as a whole. Maybe more politicians should come out more...perhaps they won't have to resign every time something like this happens.

If I remember correctly, it was McGreevey. I was so surprised that people totally forgot about all the other scandals McGreevey was involved with as soon as they heard that he's gay. This proves even more than the public cares so much about their leaders' sexuality rather than their role in the community...most of the time anyway.
