Child Abuse: A real life story

I have heard about babysitters hurting children, but it was always on the news and it was never close to home. That was, until my cousin was thrown my his babysitter. He is my cousins baby, so we arent really cousins, but he is the cutest thing you will ever see. This is his story.
Hinton Meyer is a cute, almost year old baby and would never do anything to hurt anybody, but that is not true for his attacker. My cousin and his wife had known her for several years and she had never seemed the type of person who would do anything to hurt a child because she was friendly and had children of her own. Well, she had babysat for hinton before, but this time was different. We do not know exactly why she did what she did, but we do know that he was thrown to the floor with such force, that his skull was shattered. It was still baby skull soft, so for it to be shattered, he had to be thrown very hard. He got a brain clot because of it, and by the time the police got there, he was unconcious.
When he got to the hospital, they were told that he was not guaranteed to make it because of the injuries. He went into surgury, where they removed the brain clot and removed a piece of his skull. They do not know if he has brain damage, or will have to relive the first year of his life over again. (walking, crawling, talking, etc.) The pressure in his brain kept building to dangerous levels and we all thought that he wouldnt make it. It looked pretty grim. Today, his condition has improved. He has half opened one of his eyes and they are almost ready to remove a device that moniters his brain pressure. They say that it could take from 3 to 6 months before they can even start to reconstruct his skull.
What struck me the most about this is that in a fit of rage, somone could have killed an innocent child. The lady who did this is being charged with child abuse and the details of the case are so terrible, that my cousin will not even tell his wife or anybody else about it. Child abuse is something that we hear on the news, and deal with when we decide who to watch our kids. It is sick and i cannot believe that something like this is so wide spread in America, and all over as well.
What made the situation better was my cousins wife's faith during this saga. She has started a web page that she writes on to update anybody who is interested in his condition, and in doing so, her faith in God has been strangthened because she has to rely on him through this. It is amazing how well she is handling this, even though sometimes she has her down days.
