Just My Luck

I've always been told that I am an extra lucky person. Since I almost died when I was a baby, everyone has said that I'm lucky to be alive. On top of this, I have some Irish blood in my veins and my name is Kelly. Kelly green is my favorite color in fact. My due date was March 17th, St. Patrick's Day, too. All of this has never meant that much to me personally, but my family always made me scratch off the gray stuff on their prize cards and send in the Publisher's Clearinghouse letters.

I've bought into to it to some extent--believing that I have more luck than others. I do experience some rather chance happenings. I've had three people tell me that I'm lucky in the last week, so maybe I am. Does anyone really believe in luck anyway?

First, I went looking for someone that I know down the street. I knew kind of where he lived, but I was enlisting the help of a couple people in the street when he walked by. The people said I was lucky and made a big deal about it. Maybe I just got lucky that day.

A couple days later, one evening, I found 120 Yuan on the ground. It's about $17. For some people in China, that's a week's salary. That much money is never found on the street in China. I didn't believe my eyes when I looked down and it was just there. I thought the bills were fake, but alas, they were real. This is when I started to feel pretty lucky. Even if someone does drop that kind of money in the street, it wouldn't stay there for long. I have hard time believing that I was the next person to see that money after it the ground. If someone would have seen it before me, he or she surely would have nabbed it as well.

Then, Xiaomei was found. She's a family friend who my grandmother lost touch with 5 years ago. She's still living in Beijing, but it took some doing to find her since, you know, there are so many people in China. Finally, after I got my boss to call her old employer, Xiaomei called my boss a few weeks later. I got to talk to her for the first time in 16 years yesterday and it was wonderful. It's so strange to catch up with someone and catch them on all the changes in your family after such a long time apart.

Maybe I am lucky. I'm still not sure if I believe in it, but I'm leaning towards yes given the three events of the last week.

Luck is a different story. Yes, chance happenings do occur for the betterment of the person, I think. Many bad things can happen to make you not take the good things for granted, and so on.

On a different note, I'm glad you finally found Xiaomei! That is good news indeed!

The sanity within is overwhelming.

Since she's living in Beijing, I'll definitely be heading up that way sometime soon. I love Beijing.
