A friend of mine emailed me this chain letter concerning immigration. I laughed at it's contexts because of it's obvious sarcasm. Being a sarcastic person myself, I appreciated it for what it was but nothing more. I don't really believe there is a simple solution for illegal immigration. It's sad that this is what it is know as, because at somepoint in our lineage, our ancestor's were immigrants as well.
But just because I don't agree with everything in this editorial doesn't mean I can't appreciate their point of view. She made a good case against illegal immigration and I wanted to share it with the progressive u community.
A lady wrote this Editorial against illegal immigration!!! This is her point:
Recently large demonstrations have taken place across the country protesting the fact that Congress is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration. Certain people are angry that the US might protect its own borders, might make it harder to sneak into this country and,
once here, to stay indefinitely. Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests.
Let's say I break into your house.
Let's say that when you discover
me in your house, you insist that I leave.
But I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors. I've done all the things you don't
like to do. I'm hard-working and honest (except for when I broke into your house).
According to the protesters:
You are Required to let me stay in your house. You are Required to add me to your family's insurance plan. You are Required to Educate my kids. You are Required to Provide other benefits to me & to my family
(my husband will do all of your yard work because he is also hard-working and honest, except for that breaking in part).
If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my
RIGHT to be there. It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I'm just trying to better myself. I'm a hard-working and honest, person, except for well, you know, I did break into your house.
And oh yeah, I get a free education, where you have to pay your own way through college.(TEEHEE)
And what a deal it is for me!!! I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of cold, uncaring, selfish, prejudiced, and
bigoted behavior. Oh yeah, I DEMAND that you learn MY LANGUAGE!!! so you can communicate with me. And don't forget to make sure your forms are in MY language - I need to understand them...
Why can't people see how ridiculous
this is?! Only in America
And only in America could you be so free to state your opinions no matter what the cause. On a side note, I hated the ending about the language. There is no official language in the United States and I don't beleive there should be. English isn't our language just because it's the most widely used. When England 'owned' America, their language made an impression upon the people here that lasted through the centuries. Everyone should be able to say what they want in whatever language they fell.
Thank you.

There are some valid points here. In a way, I'd like to say, let them all stay (which they will regardless, most of them at least), but I do realize that something has to be done. And, if they go to college, they do have to pay for it. There are some taxes that they pay, like sales tax. I agree about the language. Businesses include spanish because it is intellegent to do so when there is a large spanish speaking community. The government should because it has to deal with people speaking spanish. And, it isn't easy to learn another language, especially when you're an adult and especially English, which is essentially a silly, overcomplicated language. In addition to that, these people work hard, they don't really hae the time to learn another language.

wow.. that is a really interesting editorial. It makes a lot of sense but yeah I don't agree with every point. I really don't mind immigration as long as they go about it the right way. As a country we are more protected if there are people just sneaking in. I get why they feel the need to sneak in though since it is soo hard to get into this country and they are desperate. As for the language, I think it is fun to learn about other languages and other cultures. Why not learn about the rest of the world?? They are part of us too.
Trying to make an analogy between undocumented presence in the country and an outrageous violation of individual property rights doesn't resist the most simple analysis.
Pursuing the analogy, you did in fact hire the intruder to do those house chores. And you are not letting him stay for free, you are renting him part of your house.
And you make him perform the most undesirable chores, which strangely enough no other member of your family is lining up to do.
And this hypothetical "family" is so hypocrite, that instead of assuming a righteous position and asking this intruder to leave, or do the humane thing and adopting him as a member, takes a middle ground and makes his life every day a little more miserable with petty piecemeal "house rules", hoping he stays subdued but doesn't leave.
And in the meantime, he is paying the social Security of your grandpa.
So yes, let's continue with this house analogy all you want.

And suppose that this squatter brought in his fellow squatters by the thousands, and he declares the largest room of your house "independent".
And then, graciously, he accepts this large room under his protection.
And suppose that after the squatter did all the things you say he did and ten times worse, he illegally grabs half of what used to be your house.
And to add insult to injury, he offers you to purchase a tiny slice of your doormat (the Gadsen purchase), and your home economy is by that time such a wreck that you accept any money thrown at you.
And suppose that decades later when you, the once legitimate owner, and your children and grandchildren, are reduced to no more than a portion the backyard of the now wealthy usurper's house, one of his grandchildren starts making moronic analogies ...

If you break in to my house. You can bet you won't be on my insurance, because you won't be going out in 1 piece.
I love it when I read stories about Grandmas dispatching criminals! It always makes my day. There is no justice sweeter than the kind dispensed at the scene of the crime.
