be grateful!

Another tuesday on campus, another day to study and further my education. I sometimes wonder how appreciative, or not, the youth here in Texas are of their education (because obviously I don't know many youth from anywhere else), especially young women.

We're all very lucky to be here, going to school, living in America, living in Texas; very fortunate to not be, for example, living in Nigeria, struggling daily to find food to eat, work to do, clean water to drink. Could you imagine a life where, as a young adult, learning to read was nearly impossible --because you were too busy surviving? Imagine being prosecuted for challenging the government in a newspaper that over 80% of your country can't even read, anyway! Here that is a liberty we take for granted.

I could go on listing everything we take for granted, but mostly on my mind lately is the general lack of appreciation and gratitude for our freedoms, especially that of our freedom to educate and better ourselves. Not only is that a freedom we take for granted, we take for granted that it is possible to pursue because we generally have all the tools and advantages necessary; some of us don't even have to earn it, our parents do that for us.

Maybe the perspective of working my way through college, instead of it being paid for by my family, extended or immediate, has given me some advantage; or maybe (the more likely scenario) --that's horseshit, and we should all just wake up and realize how damn lucky we are.

I think you are on the right track. We don't know how good we have it. We think adults are mistreating us because you have to go to school. Little did we know at the time what they say is true. The better your education the better off your future wil be. I think we definitely need to start to reach out more to the younger generation and shed some light on other cultures. The same way you did in your blog. I will make sure I start in my family. I also know that it is sometimes a struggle but that shouldn't be a reason not to want better for yourself.

I was taught that free speech adn freedom of thepress were very important, because not all countries had them, but that there was no point to them as long as people did not use them or protect them. "Gratefulness" is a double-edged sword.
