Really? You take birth control and you don’t have sex!

There are so many common misconceptions about birth control that need to be straightened out for everyone to better understand reasons why woman go on the ”pill”. The truth may surprise you and make you look at these “sex crazed woman” as individuals who may not being using birth control to protect against sex because they may in fact be virgins.

I was 14 when I was first put on Yaz and it has been a life saving medication. I was on this pill for 4 years and proudly was a virgin for the 4 years. I am still on Yaz and I have been on it for almost 7 years. Many people thought I was on it so i could have sex. The puzzled look on their face was funny when they found out I was a virgin. They wondered why I was on it. Hopefully this will put this common misconception to rest.

I will be blunt and I am not holding back. My periods were awful and painful. I didn’t have a normal 28 day cycle, but rather a 20-40 days cycle. Pretty much when ever my period wanted to come it would. My period didn’t care if I wasn’t expecting it and wearing white pants. The pain was excruciating and lasted from 4 to 10 days. I would go into psycho rages of crying, and yelling at everyone for no logical reason. I was pissed at the world and wanted to inflict the pain I was feeling on anyone else verbally. I was persuaded to go on Yaz by my mom. Many people looked down on her thinking she put me on it so I could have sex.

Common misconceptions about Birth control uses:

1. The main misconception is :you are on birth control so you can have sex when ever you want.

MYTH (This applies to some people not all)

Birth control has so many benefits that people don’t even know about.

1. Acne. Birth control can help clear up acne. Since it has hormones this helps clear up acne and make your completion look better.

2. Moodiness. Many woman get moody when they are about to start their period and during. When this moodiness is affecting your life not just a little bitchiness. The birth control lessens moodiness. There is no guarantee that you won’t have ANY moodiness, but it can lessen your moodiness where you can live your life.

3. Birth control helps regulate your Cycle. If a woman has a period that comes when it feels like it, it is always a good idea to go on birth control to fix this problem. After your body gets adjusted to the birth control your cycle will regulate to a normal 28 day cycle. You will know the day your period will start and not have to put yourself through the embarrassment of ruining underwear and pants.

4. Less cramps. I used to be in massive pain for 5 days when I wasn’t on birth control. Once you get on birth control you may experience less cramps. They won’t be as intense and painful. Sure some pain may still exist, but not as bad as it was before you started taking birth control.

5. Shorter Periods. Some birth control medications can allow you to have shorter periods. Some like Loestrin 24 can allow you to have 3 day periods. Others can allow you to have 4-6 day periods compared to the 7 day periods.

6. Lighter periods. Some birth controls can let you have lighter periods. Yaz is about average to normal depending what it feels like doing that month.

Common misconceptions about Birth control itself:

1. You have a period when on birth control.

MYTH

1. While on birth control what you experience is not a period, but rather a withdrawal from the hormone pills which causes the bleeding. This applies at least for birth control in general. Yaz also included this information in the manual that comes with the medication.

All birth controls’ are the same.

MYTH

1. Although my doctor said Loestrin 24 was the same as Yaz it definitely is NOT. I went psycho on Loestrin 24 when my doctor gave me samples because they were out of Yaz. The hormones are different and Loestrin 24 is lacking a hormone I apparently needed. Many birth controls work differently, but still have the same objectives. To keep you from getting pregnant and to straighten out everything else listed above; such as acne, and pain.

2.Implantation is VERY unlikely. This is true. The main reason is (if taking correctly and if you are engaging in sexual activity) birth control causes the mucus lining in your uterus to thicken making it harder for sperm to get passed. Also you don’t ovulate on birth control. Now if you miss the pills you have a higher chance of getting pregnant.

Birth control kills unborn babies if you are having sex

MYTH

3. You don’t ovulate therefore the chances are slim, and also like I stated above the period is from withdrawal from the birth control hormone. Unless you miss a lot of pills you can’t have a baby because of these facts. Eggs can’t be fertilized, and you are not killing anything.

4. If used properly birth control is 99% effective against pregnancy compared to many skeptical people. Noticed I said “If used properly.” this means taking the pill every day. Each day you miss a pill you have a slight chance of getting pregnant.

Why it is good to have a period:

1. Although periods wear you out it is actually good for you. Since woman lose blood they have to replenish the supply in the body. This is good because it is giving you something new. This could be a reason why woman live longer than men besides the fact we store more water than men do.

Birth control may have been designed for sex, but many people don’t have sex and need birth control to level out their moods, decrease the pain, and many other reasons. So throw out the sex crazed birth control woman stereotype, and use common sense. I hope you found this helpful and informative!

I actually hadn't heard that before. I always thought women on birth control, whether or not they were having sex or have ever had sex were smart. Condoms can break. It's not a bad thing to be prepared.

I have a ton of health issues that has screwed up my whole body, especially my cycle. I wouldn't even call it a cycle really. It was so incredibly random... I was on the shot, but after I had a couple of strokes, my ob/gyn wouldn't give me anything. I never had problems with cramps, and I'm pretty much always moody.

I got anemic at one point. I had my period for over two weeks, so my doctor finally gave me an IUD- Mirena, I think it's called. It has hormones that stay localized so it won't increase any health risks from the hormones. I love it. I'm still random, but I can deal with it. I don't get anemic any more.

Even though this was a legitimate health issue, my insurance still refused to pay for anything that is typically sold as birth control. Not to mention, pregnancy would be very high risk for me, for both me and a fetus. I think it's ridiculous that some insurance companies pay a higher rate for Viagra and the like than any kind of birth control. That's another blog altogether though.

I don't really think any woman should have to defend her use of the pill or any other kind of medication described as birth control or her sex life (or her lack thereof). It's nobody's business unless you want it to be. I think it sucks that society gives women a guilt trip for making decisions about sex.

What makes those people ridiculing your mom about the birth control even more ignorant is that Yaz isn't even really marketed as birth control. The fact that it is BC is more of an aside thing and the marketing focuses on the fact that it takes care of the extreme moodiness and cramps.

Good post. Hope the people that need to see this find it.

I have plenty of friends who are still virgins and are on birth control. Actually, I have friends who want to use yaz even because even though their cycles are normal hteir hormones are insane and their cramps hurt like hell. I'm actually one of those people who want it. My period comes between 17-28 days depending on stress and other things and the pain in unbearbale for a day.

Great Blog!

It's important that people understand the facts and myths regarding birth control. Too often, people judge you if you take the pill. I've had a boyfriend once that assumed I slept around because I had been on the pill for years. No one should ever make generalizations.
