"quiet warfare".... Why are we so silent on anti-abortion terrorism?

Tell me this doesnt make you want to throw up or cry.

On September 11, 2006, the fifth anniversary of the terror attacks that devastated our nation, a man crashed his car into a building in Davenport, Iowa, hoping to blow it up and kill himself in the fire.

No national newspaper, magazine, or network newscast reported this attempted suicide bombing, though an AP wire story was available. Cable news (save for MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann) was silent about this latest act of terrorism in America.

Had the criminal, David McMenemy, been Arab or Muslim, this would have been headline news for weeks. But since his target was the Edgerton Women’s Health Center, rather than, say, a bank or a police station, media have not called this terrorism — even after three decades of extreme violence by anti-abortion fanatics, mostly fundamentalist Christians who believe they’re fighting a holy war.

Since 1977, casualties from this war include seven murders, 17 attempted murders, three kidnappings, 152 assaults, 305 completed or attempted bombings and arsons, 375 invasions, 482 stalking incidents, 380 death threats, 618 bomb threats, 100 acid attacks, and 1,254 acts of vandalism, according to the National Abortion Federation.

The punchline of McMenemy's action is that the clinic he attacked DIDN'T EVEN PROVIDE abortions... Just pap smears and gynocological treatments and birth control for low income women.   But they still wont have health care while hte clinics doors are closed to repair damage he did...

This is NOT OK!  Yes, abortion is a polarizing issue.... but NO amount of polarity gives ANY of us the right to kill to perpetrate our side.  Quite humorous given that this is the same base who preaches such hate and fear about Muslims for the actions of a few terrorists.

yes abortion is legal, but does that do us any good if we can't get to the clinic doors because the clinic cant find a doctor willing to put up with death threats?

I am perpetually disgusted by how the extent of this terrorist cause is ignored... They refused to consider anthrax terrorism when it was mailed to abortion clinics, yet created a panic when it was mailed to a few reporters and a few politicians.  Double standard much?

Hats off to those still brave enough to work at clinics providing this medical service, despite murderers who claim that ANY job at the clinic, whether bookkeeping or janitorial work, is enough of a guilt, or complicity to die, so that those unborn fetus' may live.

The stories and statistics and quotes are disturbing.  I didnt even realize it was this bad, although most certianly i was aware of the animosity many good "christians" direct towards these clinics.

TERRORISM IS TERRORISM PEOPLE, end of story.

This old lady recently tried to get me excommunicated from the Catholic church because I wrote an article about extracting hate from the pro-life movement. I am pro-life, but I do acknowledge that their are those that are not expressing their opinion in a way that is loving to life at all. I tried to write an article about that, and I got my name slandered by an old woman who called me ignorant and said that no pro-lifers were hateful.

It's really a shame.

David Robert McMenemy tried to save innocent babies from being murdered by babykilling abortionists. He made a mistake, but at least he tried. A lot more than you have done. The real terrorists are those who murder helpless babies. Stop picking on this guy.
SAY THIS PRAYER: Dear Jesus, I am a sinner and am headed to eternal hell because of my sins. I believe you died on the cross to take away my sins and to take me to heaven.

There is no "at least he tried".... MURDER IS MURDER. And this sort of action is NO BETTER than the actions of fundamentalist Muslim factions, and terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda.

ALso, more people exist in the world than just Christians, so don't mind if some of us sit that last prayer out. Nice try for the conversion though.

It all depends... You view cells as a couple of helpless babies, I view them as helpless babies when they're born, and sent to abusive foster homes, or neglected by a mother who can't afford to feed them and isn't able to get help from the father.

Don't like an abortion, don't get one. But don't interfere with my right to have one. and DON"T attack a doctor because they are doing their job.

I think your post showed the duplicity in our government. They are ready to attack when a person fits a certain "mold" yet when the person doesn't fit that mold they don't care. They also don't recognize the acts on woman's health clinics as act of terrorism yet I think they should be.

My but comes from you comments about Christians. Yes, I know there are alot of crazy whacked out Christians that perform these acts, but there are just as many and probably more that aren't like that. I am a Christian and I am pro-life BUT I am NOTHING like those people you are describing. I felt like your statements about Christians were stereotyping and I'm guessing that something that the pro-choice section wants to avoid also. Just because I am a Christian and pro-life doesn't mean I am a crazy bomb wielding close minded fundamentalist, I am the complete opposite, just like I bet you wouldn't want someone to assume because of your stance on abortion that you are a baby killer, because I am guessing you're not one.

I think these two stereotypes just fuel the fire and make those of each group who aren't that way feel attacked maybe.

offending the 'pro-life" ones like you. Or even the "pro-choice" ones who don't support a complete ban on abortions but want some sort of anti-unwanted-pregnancy aid or legislation or education ?

I don't get ehat your statement means because it isn't a complete statement. If you are asking for clarificatio, I was talking in my post about stereotyping and how just because I am a Christand and pro-life doesn't mean I wouldn't hurt anyone like the origional poster was talking about. I was getting at that I felt she was lumping everyone who was a Christian and pro-life was like that but we're not. I respect everyone's beliefs and choices, if you choose to be pro-choice, then that is your choice, it's not my choice to make.

without the steriotypes and the misunderstandings.

(Actually, I'm visiting with Fox right now, so that was my take on what fox said.)

I do wonder myself why it's treated as vandalism and ok--just because it's a wedge issue. But if muslims did it they would call it terrorism.

I agree, that is completely hypocritical and there shouldn't be a double standard. I agree with that completely!

My original reply was direct at other topics the original poster has said about Christians and it sparked a nerve I have been feel for the 4 or so week I have been on here. Atleast in abortion blogs, stereotyping from what I have seen happens all the time and I just snapped. It actually prompted a longer more thought out blog on stereotyping, it called "Crazy Bomb Toting Christian Fundamentalist vs Baby Killers". The title is extreme but I can tell you that the content of the blog is well though out and as unbiased as I could be.

I think first the non-fundie Christians felt attacked by Christians (not to mention non Christians like Jews, agnostics, athiests...) And that spawned an opposite swing to "If you claim you're a Christian what happened to following the 10 commandments? or feeding the poor? etc)

LisaNorkus's picture

I agree, I feel attacked everyday because of what the fundie Christians do. Because as soon as someone learns I am a Christian they assume I am like that and I am not.

In fact I just went on attack after I read a fundie Christian post. I strive to follow the 10 commandments but I am not perfect, no one is. As far as taking care of those less fortunate, I do. Here:
