Along with materialism in America comes stereotypes. we all stereotype the samrt kids, the skaters , the preps, the kocls and such. Even by having those names we stereotype, because that is what we know them by, we do not consider how complex their lives must really be. For example, the kid who is a band geek, may be a really cool guy and not really a geek, just someone who has an aptitude for playing music. The preps are stereotyped as being somewhat conceited and rich. In truth, their families could be having finacial problems and have huge self-esteem problems. Stereotypes I believe are just our way of being self secure, if we believe we know what we want ot know about a person, we will have no desire to meet them. As such, we do not need to reach out to others and will not have to go out of our comfort zone.

Please see my own blog on stereotypes: http://www.progressiveu.org/205203-stereotypes-are-not-wrong-or-bad-idiocy-is
I do not believe stereotyping in general is bad - it's when we use these stereotypes to judge others that we get into trouble...
