It seems that our culture has become so entrapped in materialism. I realize that our government is a capitalistic government and that as such, there will be some degree of materialism. I believe that if the materialism in America were not so much, then there would not be so many poor people. We would be more willing to give to tohers. At the same time, we could save more and be prepared for any catastrophes that might occur. If we all spent more time preparing for the future, then we would be more sound. The hurricane in New Orleans would not have been devastating for so many families if they had saved some money in banks in other states and for the ones who still had housing, but no stores had stored extra food and rations, then it would have been os bad. America wants to be prepared for everything,it tries for many of them, the wars and such, but the citizens are not prepared themselves.

I'm not sure exactly what you're saying here. You started off talking about materialism, but then ended up talking about preparedness for the future...
Are you saying that the people of New Orleans were too materialistic to have escaped the hurricanes?

materialism isnt the reason for poor people. there are several factors that result in "poor people". our economy, for one. the lack of desire for work, for another. materialism IS a bad thing, to some degree, but its human nature, not just the result of a capitalistic goverment. a capitalistic goverment just encourages it, because here you're allowed to work for what you want, what material items you want.
thats simply why other types of government dont work as well, such as a communistic government. if you think about it, in a world where everything is even, everyone is equal, it's ideal. however, when human nature comes into play at this, its all about greed. there becomes a lack of work incentive because no one is advancing farther and everyone is stuck in a setting.
but no, materialism isnt the root of the non-wealthy.

well what I mean, is that people need to stop worrying about getting the lastest styles and think more about their future rather and someone other than themselves. They should do something to help the less fortunate. Being homeless is not necessarily a result of being lazy. It could result for many reasons. Say someone had a horrible car accident and no insurence or the insurence company would not pay for it, they work on minimm wage and are forced to sell their house, their wages are garnished, their car is repossessed and they have nowhere to live, without any money. It is not their fault, it just happened and some people just need a chance to get back to how they were and they would stay there. Also, this man would have benefited from savings. I am saying everyone in America is too materialistic, and if Ameerica had not been so, it would have turned out better for the misplaced families.Even I am somewhat materialistic. It is the society we were born into. but I have started to work on that. Why is it popular to wear polos that have the designer on the front? Is that not materialsitic?
