The stock market has never really peaked my interest, and then one day I decided to study it. I have been watching the stocks like a hawk for nearly 6 months or more. Monday stocks were bad besides gold and a few other exceptions. Dow dropped 504 points, but I figured it was just one of those days. Then I flip on the news and see that Dow closed Tuesday losing 405 points.( Of course stocks do this, but maybe this is a cause for concern) Lehman Brothers a bank that predates World War 2 and survived the depression of the 1930's filed the largest banckrupty in American History. Sure the media could be spicing up what is really true, but I think we all should be concerned because the economy is getting worse day by day.
The next president could make the economy better or they could make the economy worse. When Obama's advisor and McCain's advisor where asked on CNN what they were playing to do I was outraged when neither of them gave any solid answers. The candidates have been so focused on winning people over for their parties, bashing each other, and talking about issues that don't seem to matter at the moment. It seems like the economy has not crossed their mind until today. AIG one of the largest insurance companies almost hit rock bottom, but luckily the government kindly bailed them out with a 85 billion dollar break. The thing is how many companies can the government bail out while making us suffer? The taxpayer which is just about everyone will have to help pay off this big chunk of change. This could be good for the economy, but it could also be worse on the taxpayers who may not be able to afford even more than they can now.
I am currently unemployed because I was receiving 7 hours a week, and my boyfriend is as well. My boyfriend has put out over 60 application with no call backs, interviews, or anything. The unemployment rate is 6.1 right now, which is not good and not bad considered in the 1970's it was 10 percent and during the great depression (at least when it started) it was 25 percent, but it should raise some flags. ( the employment rate does not take into account people who can't draw unemployment as well, so imagine how much higher the percentage is)
Something really needs to be done about the economy. It is painful to walk into the store each week and see the prices rise 10 more cents than they were the week before. Gas of course is going up. Ending the war would help the economy, but how solid are these candidates promises? It is not like we have not gone through this economic crisis before, like in the 1970's, 1987, 2001, and many other years. What goes through my head now though is what is the fate of America? This bad news is all we need right now. As negative as this sounds I feel that right now there is not much to hope for. We have two candidates to choose from and it is almost a life or death situation if you ask me. I do not like either candidate, but we must ask ourselves who can bail us out of the economy crisis? if we make a wrong decision than it could get worse. At this point researching the candidates and their goals really won't help as much as it would of 6 months ago, and we do not know who will really deliver what they promised.
People want to deny we are in a recession, but I infact believe we are in one. Is a depression likely? I really don't know at this point. If people go crazy and start pulling stocks out and money out of their checking/saving accounts maybe. Economist state that we are no where near a recession, but many also said that back in 1930.
I do not know the fate of America, but I do know it might be wise to stock up on food as a precaution. At this point there really is no one to turn to. There are no quick fixes for the 8 years of damage the Bush Administration has plagued on our economy, and everything else. Maybe everything will be ok, but maybe everything may not be. We must hope for the best, but except the worst. As for the fate of America...the jury is out on that issue.

I've had the same thoughts running through my head about what the fate of things are to be. I'm very worried about it as I have big plans for myself. I don't want to be homeless again. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Yet, I think with the unemployment rising, I'm going to be seeing more homeless in the streets.

Is gas still rising in places? It's been falling here pretty consistently over the past few weeks; we're down to $3.27 a gallon near where I live (though it's 10-15 cents more expensive in the next closest town, where I work and go to school). And we were up at $3.50 only a few weeks ago.

Since I wrote this gas has fallen quite a bit. It is 3.39 here right now. It fell 10 dollars a barrel. I am not sure if it is still rising in places or not. that is something to look into.
Sorry to disappoint you, but I am voting for Lewis Black.
