A comon argument I hear agianst gay marriage is that it would take away the sanctity and meaning of marriage. Now first of all, what are the sanctity and meaning of marriage? The question of something losing sanctity because of something someone ELSE does is kinda ridiculous. That prospect is about as ridiculous as the idea of bowling being ruined by left-handed people for those of us who are right-handed. Just because other people do things in a slightly different way has no effect on you. For example, let us imagine a species on a far away planet, or a culture on an isolated island had or has gay marriage. Does this have an effect on straight marriages? If it does, one must swonder from where that effect comes. If it doesn't, that proves that it is simply the opinions of the people in question which taint their experiences.

I agree that the argument against gay marriage is tired and a little confusing. I think that the sanctity of marriage was shattered when half of couples get divorce anyway.
Honestly I think that gays would take their marriage more serious though...because they have to fight for their right to get married...It upsets me when people say that marriage is a religious thing, and that gays/lesbians are not religious..I know plenty of people who go to church at United Church Of Christ..gays and lesbians can be religous...but what about atheist that get married? I don't understand..what is wrong with it? if you are going to take away the rights of gays/lesbians getting married, are you going to take other rights away from people? Our nation is screwed up..<3 Lindsey
Sanctity of marriage? It was lost when Britney married her life long friend for 8 hours at a drive in chapel in Vegas. Thats a loss of sanctity, not homosexuals proclaiming their love for each other formally.
William Saroyan wrote a great play on this theme, that purity of the heart is the one success worth having. "In the time of your life---live!" That time is short and it doesn't return again. It is slipping away while I write this and while you read it, and the monosyllable of the clock is Loss, Loss, Loss, unless you devote your heart to its opposition.
