As I sit here listening to Coheed, I am thinking back on my belief shifting that I constantly go through. I've written on how the concept of nothing doesn't exist physically or really metaphorically for that matter. It seems the time is ripe to tackle the idea of our being, but without all the technical stuff, since our being is always in debate.
Dr. Gonzo said in a comment that he believe that what we are is really just thought. It is a good explanation for supernatural occurances like hauntings and the like. Wombels has other theories on this as well. I assume that it would be an interesting exchanges of ideas between the Gonz and Wombels.
Most religions say that our being is that of souls. My question is then, what are we if we have no souls? Some would say we're robots and I assume others would say that it wouldn't matter. From a purely philosophical or religious viewpoint, you could say that our sould is what gives us life, while science can logically prove that it is the oxygen filling our lungs with air.
The funny thing about the concept of being is that it and the concept of nothingness are closely related. Still, does being classify what we are, like in a sense of a soul, is the soul our being or is our essence our being, or neither? If we die and nothing happens then our soul doesn't exist because when we die our soul has to go somewhere, if it even exists.
Next I'll tackle my theory on what happens if our soul actually does exist.

First off, I would like to say I love this post.
If we have no souls, we are still beings. This furthers me to the question, do animals have souls? Most importantly do machines have souls? I would like to recommend you a book called 'Out of Control' by Kevin Kelly in which he addresses these questions. It really depends on what your definition of soul is. Anything that contains matter can have a soul.
Essentially we are nothing. I don't think the soul is a tangible thing. Our soul will always live somewhere, someway.

Then the question is, what is the point of a soul if it does nothing. The only good a soul does is in religious beliefs, but outside of that a soul is useless.
I know we're still beings, but I meant more along the lines of what our being is, the being of our being so to speak.
Glad you liked the post.
I would love to read an exchange between Dr. Gonzo and Wombels. If they were willing, could it be set up on the True Debates page? Or in the forums, since I don't get the impression Wombels would be into a competitive debate. They both have interesting perspectives on spiritual matters.
And in response to your post, I think the soul is just our capacity for concern and our ability to think abstractly.

But then your thought process and physiology can account as a soul then. Which leads me to believe in the possibility of no soul at all.

Could you guide me to this comment please, I would love to read Dr. Gonzo’s view upon thought.
I’m not that much into religion, I consider it like a spider web that lacks the presence of a spider to eat you once you get caught in it!
Once entangled in a web, one has all the choices in the world to figure out where the spider might be!
We are the spider, caught in a web of another....lol
Soul, well, umbilical cord….
How hard some try, it’s like a mirror we will always fail to look into for ourselves... most can only see, relate and understand the origin of their own belly button.
Unlike most animals, during the course of our lives some become much more aware enabling them to see beyond realities that are commonly shared and kept alive in various ways for various reasons.
To know beyond is to understand there is no web, only thought!
Soul is experience you hate and love about yourself, always around to pull you in and out of life, until you become part of experience itself…
Edible woman is right about her impressions regarding my views on debate, ;-)
Don't miss the party...lol
It's on my blog about Ouija boards.
I'm not much into religion either, but it is the only way I know how to discuss the soul since people outside of religions don't seem to try to find it that much.
lol, i need to set you and Dr. G up in a forum because Edible Woman is right, it would be a great conversation.
