Today I received in my mailbox a personal invitation to an advanced screening of Fast Food Nation.
Okay, let's rewind a little bit. I'm the president of the campus programming association, also known as the Campus Activity Board on my campus. Aside from the Student Government Association, we're the second most regarded and 'important' organization on campus. I'm also a mass communications major with dual concentrations in audio recording technology and video production.
Addressed to me in the CAB mailbox was a newsletter, stickers, and other promotional gear for the upcoming film Fast Food Nation, as well as an RSVP for two free tickets to an advanced screening in Raleigh.
When I first heard of Fast Food Nation, I thought it was just another Super Size Me. The fact that its sponsored and distributed by Fox made me weary to the film as well.
A friend of mine, a mass comm senior with the same dual focuses as me (he happens to be organizing an independent film festival for the spring semester) saw my stickers and decals. He asked where I got them, and I told them they were given to me and I was invited to an advanced screening. He asked if I had gone already; I told him I hadn't. Needless to say, I know who I'm taking with me now.
I went to the website, and read the list of actors in the film. I was a little confused as my first impression of the film was that it was a documentary. Avril Lavigne, the bane of my existance, is listed in the credits as well. Again, I was turned off.
That was until I watched the trailer. Its an actual storyline around the fast food industry. Think Waiting + Thank You For Smoking. So far, the film actually looks promising!
I shall inform ProgU of my finding after the showing on Nov 14.
