My Friend Mirena, My IUD

I have this friend, Mirena. She has completely changed my life ever since I met her over two years ago. At that time, I had really terrible back pain with lots of bleeding during my periods. Most times I would get a fever and feel nauseous as well. I tried birth control pills to regulate my periods so that I could take pain meds before everything got started, but the fake hormones made me gain lots of weight and feel depressed. That's when my gyno introduced me to Mirena, the Mirena device, my IUD.

As far as I'm concerned, it's the best form of birth control out there. Getting it put in was quite painful, but I was so nervous that I made it worse. Besides a little abdomen pain and some light cramping, there were no initial side effects. I continued to have pretty heavy periods for a couple months, but then they got lighter and lighter. After a few more months, my periods went away all together. The Mirena doesn't make everyone stop bleeding, but a significant percentage at least has lighter, more comfortable periods. The deal is that the small plastic t-shaped device, while it blocks the fallopian tubes, it also releases a small amount of hormone locally. This hormone thins the lining in the uterus that normally builds up during a woman's cycle and in some cases it's practically non-existent. So for me, I barely have the occasional spotting. It's really been a life saver. It lasts for up to 5 years, costs about $100 if you have insurance and once you get it taken out, you can get pregnant pretty soon.

My one hang up about it is that it is unnatural. I don't 100% like the idea of having a tiny piece of plastic in my uterus, but I was pretty desperate for relief and nothing else worked. I just want to put the info out there about this not quite so popular form of birth control that has worked so well for me.

I'm really glad that its helped you so much.

The reason why IUD's aren't well known is because back when they were first invented, people didn't yet know about chlamydia. The way they first constructed IUDs made women particularly suspectible to chlamydia and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. So then when women went to have them taken out and tried to have kids, they found out they couldn't because the PID had made them sterile. So they took IUDs off the market. Now that the medical community knows about chlamydia, they've brought them back, but that's why the Mirena commercial says that IUDs should be for women in a "committed relationship" with"low risk of developing PID" that "have already had a child". They do the disclaimer so that they're covered.

I forgot about all that when I wrote the post. I read up on IUDs when I was considering the Mirena. American women really did get freaked out and hurt by them decades ago. It was popular and effective in Europe for about 10 years before it ever came out on the American market.

I got mine a couple months before I got married and I haven't had a child yet. My gyno had a little trouble getting it in, but it stayed in and I haven't had any major problems.

Thanks for the info!

I have seen commericals for this. I am on Yaz it works great for me. My doctor ran out of samples once and gave me loestrin 24 and told me it is the same. IT'S NOT! Yaz has great hormones in it and I went psycho on the loestrin and didn't have a period. I like having my period, on birthcontrol that is. Before it would come when it wanted and I would want to cuss out everyone in the room for no reason. Now I am not as pissy and I know what day my period will be on.

Periods actually are good for you I read this in an article I'll have to find it. I haven't gained alot of weight on it. I have been on it for almost 6 years. I have gained about 10lbs but I have also lost weight on it too.

Thanks for sharing about this though. I found it interesting. I won't resort to that though unless this Yaz stops working. Yaz is different than other birthcontrols. But if it works for you that is great!

My best friend takes Yaz and has really enjoyed it. I may try it one day.

I'm a little concerned that I don't have my period, but not really. I don't bleed or have pain, but I still feel my body doing its thing.
