Diabetes, the silent killer

Tagged:

I joined this blog to try to get scholarship money for school as well as express my feelings about having diabetes and well as maybe educate others about it. Many people don't know a lot about diabetes and they try to give diabetics advice. They think that they are helping us, but in reality it just angers us. It isn't all about food we eat. There are several factors that affect blood sugar. Stress, exercise, illness. And don't treat us differently, yes we are sick, but want to lead normal lives just like anyone else.  We don't like having to inject insulin before we can eat.  Or having to bolus from an insulin pump.  It takes careful planning for us to be able to go out or go on vacation even if it is just overnight.  We have to make sure we have enough insulin, syringes, supplies in case blood sugar goes low, testing supplies etc.

I joined this reason for the same reason you first wrote about. As for diabetes, although, I have never experienced it personally, I know that it is a serious matter and ask that you continue to write about it. It'd be interesting to learn more about and how a diabetic person feels and he or she goes throughout their lives.

Chob,
Thanks for your support.

i'm a little bit surprised that you've had people treat you differently because you're a diabetic...i'm not, but i have a few friends that are and i've never heard that be an issue...although none of them are fans of insulin shots. =P

i'm looking forward to reading more of your experiences.

...because they didn't want to accomodate my regimine after I was diagnosed. I didn't ask for them to do anything, really...just give me a few extra short breaks during the day (for testing and to take my meds, and which I made up for by staying late), and to cut me some slack when if I had a sugar-realated episode. I had to threaten legal action to get them to make any accomodation at all, even though what I was asking for was significantly below what the Americans with Disabilities Act actually requires. In the end, I won (of course) and they capitulated. Now I work for a company that has a very enlightened attitude towards employees with disabilities.

I have been fortunate with regards to how people treat me for being a diabetic, but I do agree that it's a little weird when you've told some folks about how low a low is or how high a high is (a blood glucose high, that is) and they still wonder... In the end, all I can think is that there is yet not as much awareness about it, so people are not too clear about it, much less about the differences between type 1 and type 2, etc.

Anyway, keep up the great work! Good luck with your plans!

Hey,
Thanks for posting this blog. Hopefully this will get into the public eye and bring some more awareness. Good luck on the scholarship.

Yeah, my parents often think that people who are larger eat too much. My sister is little bit too "big" in their eyes. Even people who knows my sister would say something like, "Wow, you're so...big now. You should be more careful at what you eat." I think it's one of the reasons why my sister is so angry all the time when people mention the word "eat less food." It hurts to see people calling my sister and making her feel fat. I have to repeat and tell her many times that I like the way she is now and that she's really cute...which is true. I love her to death. It gets me angry too when I hear people say things like that to my sister. You should write more about this. Thanks for the post.

Are you type 1 or type 2? I'm doing research on diabetes (not actual human research, just looking up journal articles) for my biology seminar class, and there's some rather interesting research going on. My grandparents all have type 2, so I'm at a pretty high risk for it.
