Bush and Healthcare

The HTR's picture

President Bush had the following to say about efforts to reform healthcare:

"From my conversations with Democrats and Republicans, it is clear both parties recognize that strengthening health care for all Americans is one of our most important responsibilities," Bush said in his weekly radio address. "I am confident that if we put politics aside, we can find practical ways to improve our private health care system."

Thank God! As some without the adequate healthcare I feel that I deserve, it doesn't make sense to me that we haven't made healthcare more available to lower income families. I also can't believe how many Republicans have jumped ship because if my memory serves me correctly, the Republicans were the ones that stopped the Clintons from initiating healthcare reform in the early 1990s.

The cost of prescription drugs is rising, dental health providers aren't affordable, and state-run health plans for children seem to be more exclusive than inclusive and provide numerous hurdles.

It is my hope that Bush can get this reform passed quickly so that millions can stop suffering just because they can't afford health insurance coverage.

I completely agree. Even Israel (which some consider barbaric and imperialistic) offers free health care and full support for the elderly. The argument that free health care would be very poor and anti-American crumbles when faced with the argument that insurance companies are getting away with robbery (or close) and that there is an insane number of impoverished people, old and young, unable to get the attention they need even with a job (paying a meager minimum wage salary).

It really is sad how many people don't get the healthcare they need. Regardless of income, people are people and will need medical assistance at points in their lives.
