Clinton Proposes Vote to Reverse Authorizing War

Fanaile Essence's picture

Don't you just love political posturing?

Five years ago, congress, including Senator Clinton, backed Bush and supported the war. They gave Bush the "okay" to declare war. Now, it seems as though it's become "popular" to stand against both Bush and this war.

There are those who will say that Bush used fear tactics to gain the votes he needed to declare war. Perhaps. But Clinton now seems to be doing the same thing:

"WASHINGTON, May 3 — Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton proposed Thursday that Congress repeal the authority it gave President Bush in 2002 to invade Iraq, injecting presidential politics into the Congressional debate over financing the war.

Mrs. Clinton’s proposal brings her full circle on Iraq — she supported the war measure five years ago — and it sharpens her own political positioning at a time when Democrats are vying to confront the White House."

Basically, "Elections are next year, you want a chance?" Please...

Now, there's nothing that says that congress can actually withdraw their original vote, stripping Bush of his authority. However, this claim comes concurrently as everyone returns to re-draft a war-financing plan that President Bush vetoed on Tuesday of this week. So, even if Clinton succeeds with her little endeavor, it may not work. They might, indeed, be forced to try again at pulling the funding.

her opinion of the war may have changed....many of ordinary citizens who were for the war originally are now against the war. frankly for the reasons that its not turning out as planned.....and there seems to be a lot of deception in the air...etc etc. Clinton has just as much right to change her opinion as any ordinary citizen does doesn't she?? i mean her change of opinions simply just carry a little more weight. that's all. and they should....haha thats why shes in the position that she's in.

granted I don;t think her opinion should swing with her PMS as with some ordinary female citizens, but it should still be allowed to change and result in action.

People have a change of heart all the time! She's a woman! All the wemon need to stand up to the men! Also, war sucks! So whats the problem?

While I can appreciate a change of heart about things... sometimes you just have to move on. We all know she's changed her mind, as have many others that originally voted for the war. Instead of wasting the time trying to repeal the vote (which isn't going to make a bit of difference anyway) they need to be doing something that WILL make a difference.

Gods, I wish they'd put me in charge of Congress for a week. They could use someone to tell them how absolutely ignorant and ridiculous they have nearly all become.

LOL, right! This is nothing more than trying to make herself look good in the eye of the public for elections next year; and that's it.

They tried that. Bush Vetoed it.

"Gods, I wish they'd put me in charge of Congress for a week."

How would you go about ending this war??

"They tried that. Bush Vetoed it."

So this is the next best answer they can come up with?

"How would you go about ending this war??"

And this is going to end the war? If this ploy succeeds and Congress manages to repeal the authority they already gave Bush, that doesn't mean that he has to withdraw the troops or end the war. We'll still be there while they argue back and forth over whether it makes a whit of difference that Congress has repealed the authority.

The fact is, neither side in the great political Iraq debate is really looking for solutions to the problems. The Dems are too busy trying to get the troops home and Bush and Co are too busy trying to keep them there. We're at a stalemate. In the meantime, nothing is being done to fix the problems that are ultimately keeping us there. Sunnis and Shiites are still killing each other, the Iraqi government is still refusing to do anything of import. Since the back and forth obviously isn't working and the troops aren't coming home, it's time to go another route.

And while we're wasting time arguing, the Iraqi government still refuses to cooperate on any serious level. We give them deadlines, they fail to meet them. We pat them on the back and say that's okay, here's a new deadline. Same thing, over and over and over again. Seems to me, if we want to get out of Iraq, we need to fix that. Instead of allowing them to ignore deadlines, give them an ultimatum. Either they start carrying their load, or we start withdrawing troops. Every deadline that passes without being met, send home a few thousand troops and let the Iraqi's pick up the slack. Eventually they'll either realize we're serious and get busy or we'll be home and they'll be on their own. Congress needs to stay on Bush and the Iraqi government until this happens. And while we're doing that, let's also get together the Sunni's and Shiite's and start working out the problems that have them blowing each other all to hell. FInd out what their grievances are and start fixing them, not throwing more human bodies in front of the derailing train and hoping it will slow it down or stop it.

Until we stop playing partisan politics, we will accomplish nothing. The Dems will toss up new ideas, Bush will veto them, the Republicans will back Bush and the cycle will go on and on and on. Either work together, or deal with the fact that our inability to work together is part of the reason we're still there and no closer to a solution than we were a year, two years ago.

Who would implicate a schedule for the Iraqi government??? Bush won't allow an implication of such for our own troops, what makes you think he will do such for another country??

You see its hard to progress with even your idea becuase its not really up to congress....ultimately its up to Bush.....unfortunately he can do whatever the hell he pleases.

What plan is congress suppose to put out when Bush will just veto it anyways.....at least their attempting to threaten his power.

I'm not saying they are right in what theyre doing, and i can see it as a ploy to get attention for their campaign....but everyone has negative affects that go along with their actions soooo im not going to bother with why theyre doing it or if theyre doing it for the right reason.

I just don't see how else they can attempt to convince Bush of anything in a civilized manner.....he's too much of a hard ass to make a proposal....so why not go for the exact point where we gave him power in the first place????

i dunno...this whole war seems like an endless lose lose situation of us not getting anywhere.....thats why it seems to me we are in it for reasons not directly stated......its all just a little fishy to have such an erratic agenda in a situation such as war.

If he continues to refuse to cooperate and do what is best for our country and the Iraqis by forcing their government to take responsibility so our troops can eventually come home, it's then time to start the impeachment process.

Our problem is we just pussyfoot around and put up with piss poor leadership. We'd rather spend the time making the other side look bad than actually doing anything that will amount to anything. We say, shame on Bush, we have no faith in Bush, Bush is bad for the War or whatever... but that's the extent of it.

If Bush can't do what is best, he needs to go sooner rather than later as does anyone else that can't get with the program and stop fucking around, be they Democrat, Republican, or anything else. It's folly to keep someone in a position of power out of fear of rocking the boat when that individual is failing miserably to do the appointed tasks.

Repealing the vote won't make a difference... that's like standing in the middle of a bog and saying "well, we should have went the other way, who agrees?" It doesn't get you out of the situation or change the circumstances a bit. We work together to get out; and if the leader won't cooperate, you get a new leader.

I'm all for impeachment....in my opinion he started doing a piss poor job awhile ago.

but wouldn't it be better to know first who would be for the impeachement (who revokes their original decision for giving him the power in the first place)?? I mean, perhaps this is all part of an impeachment process that no one hasn't mentioned yet....if I were in any kind of power position, I would want to get a feel for numbers first before I did anything as drastic as moving into the impeachment process.

plus wouldnt an impeachment process extend past the end of his term anyways???

Why don't any of our Legislators spend their time figuring out how to win the war rather than how to lose it?

Instead they draft meaningless proposals that are all just a waste of time with the only benefit being to their own campaigns.

We need laws drafted to make this a better country, not just to make themselves look better before an election.

I sure hope that a real leader rises up out of all of this mess before 2008.

What real leader? All we have are politicians, politicians who suck. Leaders of a country died out long ago.

Time for a change and get these liberals and conservatives to do something for the good of the country and not for the good of themselves and their parties.

I really wish there was a 3rd party as a viable option.

How can it be done??? winning a war on terror???? what exactly are the goals of this war for our country?? How do we achieve them???

We will lose this war whether we like it or not....why??? because theres no way to win. You can't win a 'war on terror' its impossible.

I for one would rather have our troops back home rather than be part of a war that changes goals every 3 weeks. but that's just me.

maybe we shouldn't win this war. I mean seriously there's no point to winning or losing this war at all....other than our "reputation" as America.

we DO need laws to make this a better country. I wonder why Bush is spending all his time drafting laws to make other countries better???

so tell me:

"Instead they draft meaningless proposals that are all just a waste of time with the only benefit being to their own campaigns."

What makes you think this war wasnt a meaningless proposal brought out by Bush as a benefit to his campaign....oh and his daddy's "reputation"......

....there's that R word again. Apparently its impossible to escape high school. Only the scale changes.

"I sure hope that a real leader rises up out of all of this mess before 2008."

agreed.
