FX...because I'm a mutant

Well I'm technically not a mutant. My little cousins are, so is most of my family. We function quite fine for the most part; I just like to say I'm a genetically normal person with Fragile X (FX) tendencies. Though, I know the question for most people is "fragile what?!" Let me get to that Fragile X is the most common form of inherited mental retardation, it's a spectrum disorder so it can range anywhere between autism to ADHD. Most people are misdiagnosed with something else or told that their highly hyper child who has speech delays is just going through a 'phase' or something like that and they'll grow out of that.

My main cause of this blog is because I've been out with my favorite little cousin who is more like a nephew to me than any thing. Mainly because I don't have any living brothers or sisters, so my cousins are more like sisters to me than anything. They are all WAY older than me, and have kids of their own, and I am Parker's (a.k.a. my favorite little cousin which really if you ask them all they'll say they're all my favorites, and that's true...because I can't just have one :D) favorite aunt. Anyhow, Parker at the age of 8 stands at a good 5'0 and is not a light little kid...what can I say we grow 'em big in the mid west! Anyhow, I go out with Parker to somewhere new, and people who don't know him or what he goes through just STARE at us. Mainly because he is talking sooooo fast that it takes a rare person to understand what he is meaning to say, and if there is something in the area that he doesn't like he's probably gonna tell me about it, and possibly have a melt down about it.

It just kills me about how people treat him like he's some kind of person who has the plague and shouldn't be touched or talked to like he's a person. They all seem to think he's got some kind of disease that they'll catch if they're nice to him and treat him like he's anything other than alien.

Along those lines people judge so quickly because his speech isn't quite up to par, and they THINK he doesn't understand what you're saying. So, when they actually do talk to him they talk EXTREMELY slow and yell at him, because apparently when you have FX you're also deaf!

I know Parker has delays, and they're obvious...I mean really he bounces off the walls, and yeah if something bothers him he's gonna show it. If he's ticked...you're gonna know it, and let me tell you if he's happy...EVERYONE is gonna know it. I just don't think that people take the time to stop and see, he gets what is going on around him, just because he can't verbally express it, doesn't mean he doesn't get it. He's a smart child...and sometimes he's a smartass. Like about 2 months ago I was giving his sister a bath, and asked him to go downstairs and get me a towel. Though, the little snot he is decided to tell me after I'd finished asking him to go get that towel "NOT my job!" and walk away. So, I ask him again while he was in the living room and I hear "still NOT my job!" So, you see he does get it!

I think the goal of this blog is to create understanding. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but people are different. Really though where ADULTS get off looking at his BEAUTUL child like he's some form of weird alien is beyond me...and on that level why they do it is beyond me. I think if people would educate themselves before they decide they know how to FIX the world, they'd be really better off. AND they'd be less on my nerves!
