With glaciers melting and our planet getting warmer, what can people do to stop it? I know that we are barely tapping into alternative fuels but I believe that is not enough. WE really need to lessen our dependency on fossil fuels! I know there are many other fuels that can help with that, but we are not taking the risk to really take action and distribute the ideas that we have. When will it be enough for the government to REALLY step in and stop this global crisis? I believe that it is up to us (young people) to really determine what our future is going to be like. Our generation has a lot of potential to change the future, and the future is NOW. I know many adults call us the "messed up" generation because of the world we live in i.e. rising drug problem, high teenage birthrate, but we have the opportunity to redeem ourselves and change the environment for the best. Investing money into alternative fuels may not seem best right now to most people, but in the long run it will help because the world will be so much cleaner and all citizens of the world will be eco-friendly. With rising gas prices i don't see why the government is not pushing towards alternative fuels. Why is this? It would seem to be the RIGHT thing to do but apparently not to them. We only have one Earth and one shot at making it right. Why is it not our first priority? I don't understand why it isn't.

it really isnt just our lack of eco-friendly people....it is the plain, cold, simple fact that we have become a severley lazy world. we have adapted a need for cars and busses and fuels and such, when in all reality when you live inside a town you can walk to almost any where in a short amount of time but no, people have cars, i mean come one, skate, ride a bike, walk, lay down and roll, something geez...i cant beleive how lazy we are, we cant even take the time to stop and enjoy the scenery..but wait...we have destroyed alot of that too.....so we are not only lazy but super distructivve
Why is this? Simple. Oil companies are too powerful. They don't want to lose their lucrative business. While some are slowly making efforts to be greener and are shifting towards alt. fuels, they aren't doing it very fast.
We ARE making some great advancements in alternative fuels, but we could certainly be making more faster. I personally support a gas tax (http://progressiveu.org/014444-gas-tax-sustainability). But realistically, under this administration, not much is going to get done. All we can do is work on a personal, local and state level to decrease our GHG emissions and wait until a (hopefully) more environmentally conscious president is elected are sworn into office.
