To my African-American friends and fellow students, I urge you to become enlightened citizens and to not park your political support with Barack Obama simply because he is an African-American. Race loyalty is a great thing sometimes but not when it comes to selecting a commander-in-chief. I hope to pick up his book and learn some more about him before the 2008 election but I will not be making my decision in a blind fashion.
Look at his policy ideas, his positions on social issues affecting YOU, and then figure out who you will support.
Giving your support solely on the basis of race without intelligent analysis of the issues at hand is one of the worst things you can do with your vote.

I have the same qualms about the female candidates that have been anouncing their running. I'm worried that many of the votes are going just as you say: for race/gender rather than for the issues.
I asked one student at the high school on Friday who they would vote for in 2008, and she said Hillary, I asked her why and she said "It's time we had a female president". That was her whole answer.

I'm a supporter of Hillary but I understand where you're coming from. People must be educated on who they vote for but often this isn't the case.
The HTR
When does the population ever use a candidate's political ideas to elect him? It is almost always based on something else. Most use the political party to decide for them. The fact that he's black is just another factor people will use to help them decide.
I agree with you, we should think more about these things. But we won't. We will always use the easier things. Finding out what they stand for is faaar to difficult.
That the reason you vote for someone shouldn't be based on their race/gender. One of the things I hate about politics is people actually belive things that aren't true, people basically look at just the outside (ie:the way he/she looks, speaks, etc) and don't bother to think for themselves (the actual issues). Why can't people just 'play' fair? :(

I would love Barack Obama to be president because of what I hope he could be as president of the United States.
Part of his identity is being black, and part of the reason I like him is because of who is he.
