One of the schools I applied to gave me the following prompt. and as I've been goofing aroud on here it's made me ponder what's next after the internet?
Do you believe that the Internet has become a positive or negative force in today's society? Additionally, do you think your life would be better or worse off if you had lived during a time in which the Internet was a construct and not a reality?
With the ongoing popularity of the television, I hold the fate of our future in the hands of the Internet. Internet will hopefully save our society. The idea of being able to send someone something across the world in a matter of seconds is mind blowing. And with many television stations putting full length episodes on the internet, TV better get ready for some stiff competition.
The internet is slowly taking the place of all other outlets of media. The internet is killing the printed word. Newspapers are losing readers to the easy access of the internet. Although all outlets will always have a bias to them, the internet offers less partiality than the printed press or TV, because of the ever-present comment button on the bottom. You get read what other people think about the topic on hand, and even share your own thoughts on the subject. The idea of people blogging, that exchange of ideas, is so refreshing. It’s the renewal of creativity that television doesn’t offer.
The interaction of the Internet is something that the TV can never offer. When you sit down to watch your favorite program, you watch someone else’s creativity, and most people just receive, receive, and receive but never give anything back. The whole creativity aspect and the whole exchange of ideas are completely cut out. When reading print, or even something off the internet, your brain is working a lot harder than when simply staring at a screen.
It’s difficult for some of the younger generations to even think of a time that there wasn’t even electricity. It would be such a different experience, there would be loads more chores to accomplish, and the amount of time allotted for those chores would be shortened because of lack of daylight.
Even in the period of time where the Internet was just a construct, I don’t really believe it would have affected me that much, for it wouldn’t be something I was familiar with yanked away from me. I’ve never had how the internet actually functions explained to me, and I won’t pretend that I have any clue how it does work. Assuming my intelligence would be the same in my new time period, I wouldn’t be able to fathom the concepts of this brilliant new invention.
What is the role of the internet in our society?
