The recent shootings.

Being the one whom goes to the ghetto school, I often am immersed in situations that aren’t the safest. There are often race riots, and guns at school, that I can easily deal with. The fact that my school gets so much media attention for those types of situations, but none for all the amazing things we do is a joke.
It’s been a week and some change since a freshman at a school in a good neighbor hood was shot and killed in a drive by shooting. The thing is, that day in government we were discussing that there was like 4 school shootings in that past week. NIU, a middle school, a high school, and a trade school in Louisiana. We unconventionally talked about what is causing all of these problems. Initially I suggested that maybe something is wrong with our generation, genetically that is. Maybe something inside of us, makes us more prone to depression and we catch crazy easier, I don’t know. Then again I raised my hand and said I truly believe it’s because of family. The family structure has been broken down so much its ridiculous. I know, at least in my situation, I could honestly call my parents my roommates. I never see them. We never eat together, there are very few things we can talk about without screaming at one another.
Anywhoo, back to the story. I’m so very frightened of the death that has recently plagued our community. I know plenty of people who attend that school and my goodness it could have been anyone of them. Driving home Thursday after school and looking down the street to my brother’s school, where there are flashing lights. My breath gets caught in my throat and I immediately start to remember back to that morning and what words we exchanged, if any, and if they were good words or words of hate like I fear. I think could it possibly have happened again. Then of course when I make it down the street and into my house and my brothers not home yet, I freak out even worse. I squeeze him impossibly tight as he walks through the door though. No one from the school was even involved in the shooting. It was the apartments next door.
I do think that we have the right to bear arms. But I think the government needs to do something to help lower the number of guns that are obtained illegally. And make it mandatory that if you have a child in the house, regardless of age you need to get a gun safe or proper lock for the gun. The fact that teenagers can so easily get their hands on these simple machines that can so easily take a life is chilling.
