The denial of a sacred bond. What's peoples' problems with gay marriage?

I believe that every american citizen should have the same rights and freedoms as everyone else. Equality is what we have worked so hard to achieve in our nation. It seemed like we came pretty close to making this goal, but then the issue of gay marriage came up. for some reason our government today seems to believe that it shouldnt be legal. Basically saying that it isnt right for two people of the same sex to be in love and get married in order to obtain the same benefits that other married couple can. I personally dont see anything wrong with gay marriage. I have asked many people and it seems that the only answer i can get is that the bible says it isnt right. This may be true, but as a free nation we must keep the seperation between church and state.
The other argument i get is that the constitution and other documents define marriage as something between a man and a woman, and this is what our country was founded on. This may also be true, but wasnt our country also founded on the basis of slavery. That however changed over the years also in order to obtain this so called "equality" we are working towards.
Marriage is a union between two people that is sacred. It shouldnt matter what gender these two people are. You are taking away certain rights and priveleges that all american citizens are suppossed to have. We are destroying the idea of equality amoung all with this denial of marriage. It seems like the governement is trying to come up with every excuse it can to not allow gay marriage. I personally dont see what is so wrong. Maybe its just because i am an open minded teenager, who knows that people should have the right to marry who they want to.

Yes, equal rights are important. That's why this shouldn't even be a government issue. The First Amendment applies to everyone, even religious leaders who aren't comfortable with marrying a gay couple. To them, it's not a sacred bond. And they have every right to believe that.

But the same legal rights should obviously be available. Civil Unions need to be an option. If the gay couple can find a religious leader willing to marry them, so be it. But if they can't, the rights under the law still need to be recognized. After all, isn't compromise an essential part of a democracy of any kind? I think this is a fair compromise between the two sides.

And don't even call me bigoted. I'm bisexual, too.
