I recently heard news that an at home HIV test will be released (I’m not sure when). It would detect the viral antibodies of the virus. I think this could be a huge benefit, as it would make testing much more accessible. Although people shouldn’t, I think that some feel embarrassed about asking their doctor about an HIV test because of the stigma associated with the disease. This test could allow people to do a check on their own in the privacy of their own home, without the concern of what anyone else would think.
The test has the risk of a false positive, which is far better than a false negative, which I don’t think is an issue with the test. However, a false positive could make someone unnecessarily nervous or devastated about the news. At least they will be able to go to a doctor to verify the results. This would be a far better scenario than someone thinking they were in the clear and skipping a doctor’s visit on the false pretenses of a faulty negative.
My main concerns with the test are if it will be administered properly and how people would react to their results. Because someone is administering the test themselves, there is always the risk that they would not do it properly. Also, if they end up with a positive result, they may go into denial or shock and not get the treatment they need. I don’t think that would be an issue at a doctor’s office, as the doctor would ensure the patient receives their necessary care.
