Yeah, thats right... Its a direct quote... I couldn't tell you where from, but I heard it one day, blarring from the speakers of a car that went through the drive through at my work. Kind of a shocking statement to hear though as you are punching in the cash amount and handing out the change. Considering I am a girl of today, I was quite offened by the rather rude and judgementle statement made from a very liberal radio station. One name of a very popular moive star was infront of that statement, but it made me think of just putting my own name or the name of all my female friends there. Not because I was thinking that every girl today is a prostitute, but because not all of us are.
So, what exactly is a slut? If you ask another female, I think most of us would say a woman that doesnt cover enough of her body when she is dressed and is willing to get undressed with more than one guy in the period of one month; well, that would be my definition. If you asked a guy, I think he would say a girl that has been with him and his best friend. Now, what my very old dictionary says is 1. a careless, dirty, slovenly woman; slattern 2. a sexually immoral woman and 3. a female dog; bitch.
So, lets start with definition number one from the old dictionary. A careless, dirty, slovenly woman. I need an example for a girl of today, so Im just gonna go with me. I, personaly, care about alot of things and always think before I do or say something. So being careless is out. Dirty, my hair does get a little messy sometimes, but I shower daily; change my sheets every other week; brush my teeth 2 to 3 times a day; dont eat off the ground too often; and prefer my cleaned, just out of the dryer clothes to the ones that are in the hamper. I couldn't really ever define myself as dirty. Now, am I a sloven or do I have slovenly characteristics? Ok, my room is a little untidy, but I care about my appearance, and my work. I do have a few bad habits, but do those and my messy hair make me a slut according to definition 1? I personally dont think so.
Definition 2. a sexually immoral woman. Now, what is the exact definition of a sexually immoral woman? Sexually would most easily be described as having sex. The exact definition of immoral is not in conformity with accepted principles of right and wrong behavior; contrary to the moral code of the community; wicked; not in conformity with the accepted standards of proper sexual behavior; unchaste. I'm sorry to say that I'm a sexual woman, but am I sexually immoral? So lets dig into this immoral part. The code of my community in the state of New Mexico would be the law of New Mexico. And in that law, it says that a young adult, male or female, is aloud to give consent at the age of 16, as long as the other member is not over 4 years older than them and is not under 16. Considering that, Im still in the all clear "I'm not a slut" zone. Wicked, not me. Accepted standards of sexual behavior these days would be don't sleep with two guys in one month and use protection. I'm still not a slut. Unchaste, I'm not going out and doing it with someone that is under 16 or that is 23 years or older, so Im following the law. So, according to this definition, I'm not a slut.
And, last time I checked, I dont have a tail, I don't walk on four legs, and I don't bark or growl at anything. Definition 3 does not prove me as a slut.
I am a girl of today, but according to this very old dictionary, I'm not a slut. According to a very liberal radio station blarring from a very angry guy's truck, I am. I'm your normal 17 year old girl that lives in today, and I'm not gonna listen to some stupid radio station that says I am. Unless you fit under either of the three definitions for slut from the old dictionary, then you should not allow any person to call you a slut, not even a liberal radio station.

I know how you feel. I doubt girls of today are any worse than any girls throughout the history of time. It's just that now, everything is on the news, in a magazine, or the internet so people see things blown out of proportion.
I feel the same way whenever Bill O'Reilly blames a social problem on "secular progressives" like me.
Maybe this guy found out his daughter is a slut and that's why he's so angry.

Actually... he goes to my work about twice a week, and he is always angry, started yelling at me once for asking for the coupon. Then yelled at my manager. Never really heard what he was listening to till the day that the whole slut thing was playing. Found out that he listens to that stuff alot... One of the guys at work told me that he was listening to one where all people who weren't christians are going to hell. He is just a very unhappy person that needs someone in his life besides his big fluffy dog.
Hm, people like that tend to also be very pro-gun. Maybe he'll end up sucking on the end of one of his own...

In my eyes, being a slut is an act of defiance and subversion against the roles that women are cast into in American (and most other) society. That said, I believe that it is the highest act of empowerment - taking charge of your own sex life and not being bound to the stigma attached to your gender.
Fight the power of the man who wants to control your sex life.

But I could have used my definition of girls who dont cover up enough and then I would be a slut... Lets just say the dictionary has the best definition for a slut because if I used anyone elses definition than it would have been really freaken hard to prove the liberals statment wrong.
I agree. I doubt I fit anyone's standard of a slut, but I see no moral problem with girls (or guys) who are. I might have less of a problem with the word slut if the word was also applied to males.

If girls are called sluts for flirting too much, having alot of past relationships, or having sex with alot of guys; then guys should be called sluts too! But instead they are called pimps or players... Makes me mad, but I guess there isn't much I can really do about it...

Nobody I know is a slut for reals well maybe some girls but not all of them. Most of my friends that are girls are just flirtacious [and its not even so much that because they don't even realize they are flirting]. I for one would not let anyone call one of my friends that, unless its a friend they are cool with. If a guy ever chose to say those words to any of my friends I would look at them and say "hey I'm the only guy who can call them that" and probably start something. Ok. dont get mad, me and my friends call each other very bad names all the time, [sluts, whores, tossups, bitches, prostitutes, hookers, hoes, etc] its just our way, actually its mostly them to me. I dont know why they do, I'm a pure innocent angel =].

Why does "sexually immoral" have to be derived from a law or "accepted" behavior? In the past, "sexually immoral" would mean someone who had sex before marriage or someone who had sex with someone else of the same gender. Laws and standards change. In 100 years, maybe it'll be "accepted" to have sex with five partners in one month.
I do understand that you're using a definition so that you can respond to something, but at the same time, I think setting standards of "don't sleep with two guys in one month" undermines your point of women's sexual empowerment.
I did pull immoral straight from the dictionary, so that was what I went with. I could have gone with my parents definition of sexually immoral, in which case they believe that not a hint of sexual immorality should be in anyone's life. Taking that into consideration, I would have to go with sme things that were said at my church and what would happen is if you watched the simponsons, sex in the city, or any other tv show that has any kind of joking about sex, than you are sexually immoral, making just about every person alive a slut. And my point was to prove that people weren't sluts.
If being a slut means that you're sleeping around with as many partners as you can get your legs around, then, biologically speaking, men are the real sluts. It is evolutionarily ingrain in the male that he must spread his seed to as many females as possible within his life span. Since we are a social animal we keep these evolutionary impulses under control through mores and cultural values. But it doesn't mean those impulses go away.
So heres my point...
Modern women are becoming more sexually empowered (at times prematurely with the help of media) and the gender playing field is leveled. Women are just as free to seek out partners and they are capable of holding just as much, if not more power as males. When this evolutionary structure that males intuitively know and feel is challenged they take to yelling on radio stations.

There's something psychological attached to calling someone a crude name such as slut or whore. There is a psychological power for the person saying it or else they would not say it. The power is to degrade and dehumanize another person...specifically, a woman. The reason they wish to degrade, humilite or dehumanize you is because they want some power over you. Using a word with a sexual connotation denotes that the power they would like to have over you is definately sexual. The person on the receiving end of the crude comment whether they pay attention to it or ignore, psychologically internalizes it, applies meaning to it, and that person walks around with that message clinging to them whether they are conciously aware of it or not. That's why the more often you are called these words, the more likely you are to actually become them. Some men hate you because you are not interested in them, or you reject them so they want to set you up to be hurt by someone else. It's a sort of vengeance...and some men just plain hate women. Some men would love the kind of power it takes to rape you without reprecussion. If your self-esteem has been lowered to that point, then you are a much easier target.
