So...it seems that political types and all major U.S. news network have agreed to tut that Obama made a boob of himself in San Francisco. How dare he insensitively reduce small-town Americans' preoccupation with the second amendment, Moses's tablets, and border-hopping, job-stealing, welfare-sapping immigrants to our underlying frustration with the thinness of our pocketbooks? Who does he think he is, Freud? At minimum, as a sympathetic BBC pundit observed, the clumsy comment revealed that Obama, like his two counteparts, is "flawed."
To all of you who agree, I offer my sincerest apologies at my own inability to mutter in disgust at Obama's elitism.
Not that my opinion is representative of that of ANYBODY ELSE in the world. I am just disillusioned with my country, having grown up in a virtual commune, a fundamentalist Baptist family in a town in KY with 200 people where my pastor ranted about "faggots" from the pulpit and nickle-and-dimed our tiny congregation for his new SUVs, John Deere tractors, heirloom grandfather clocks, and a salary about double that of his average parishioner, where my father berated Christians who dated black people for "causing confusion" in God's omniscient plans for the order of the races and stockpiled guns for the coming Armageddon when he swore he would shoot at the Antichrist and an ominous One-World Government. Maybe I have a slightly skewed view of small-town America because, after my parents disowned me because I refused to abandon my scholarship at college because my "education" was ruining my life and turning me into a liberal, after marrying a progressive English immigrant and openly admitting my own atheism, I felt so ostracized from my community, I felt so exasperated with people who constantly tutted at me and invited me to thier church, that I had to leave Kentucky.
Maybe my experiences have embittered me. MAybe its just these experiences that have stirred my frustration with an electorate that self-righteously flounces in shock when someone dares to address these issues openly.
But it is these experiences that have prompted me to say, "Right on, Mr. Obama."
Sorry.

Speak your mind. Nice blog.

Obama but this was still a good blog. I live in Kentucky..and love it sooo much. LOL. I am just stuck here because the cost of living is so much higher every where else.
I am not atheist but do not and will not conform to a religion. I believe there is a higher power. I really agree on what you said about craming religion down a person's throat. I hate when people do that...and I also believe that pushing a religion often yields many people to turn atheist. I'm not saying this is what happened to you but it happens to alot of people.
I am very open minded though, I hate to judge people on what they believe, feel, or think. I believe people should be more open to this. Just because someone has a different view from yours about anything doesn't make them a bad person. People don't see it this way. I hate it though when a person feels like their religion or belief is the correct one. This pisses me off. No one knows that their religion is correct. I find flaws in religion.
Good blog :)

Love comments? I do too!
I fully agree with you. Religion, historically, has been the route of more harm than good (the Inquisition for one..). It is wrong to denounce anyone for differences in religious views or to force religion upon someone. Religion is another example of American hypocrisy, while we rage about Islamic Extremists, our political figures cater to Christian Extremist. This is why Obama ought to be our next President, he has experienced differences in religious views, he understands others, he doesn't frequent his rhetoric with references to God, like the idiot that currently inhabits the White House.
