Today I sat in my apartment and listened while my roommates talked about prescription medication and mental disorders. Then one of the girls said, "I don't believe that eatting disorders are anything other than just a crave for attention." My brain almost went crazy. I internalized all my emotions, opinions, and anger as I heard the statement. I was not craving attention. Eatting disorders are just that, a disorder. One does not want to have one. One doesn't tell people when they have one, unless they are found out about or ready for help. Therefore, they are not announcing to the world their eatting patterns. I am still holding these words against the girl, for she just doesn't understand it. Eatting disorders can be generational, like mine or biological, like mine again.

why don't you question her?? maybe she doesnt know what disorders are really like. i mean i knew plenty of girls in high school who made a scene of their "eating dirsoders" (i say this in quotes only because i know what you know, meaning i know they didnt have a disorder). perhaps she knew someone who was the same, or maybe they simply made a point of saying "im not hungry, i ate so much today." when all they really ate was a bag of chips. or maybe she knew someone who would say they werent going to eat for a few days cuz they needed to lose weight and then saying that they had a disorder. Maybe she thought it was enough for them to SAY they had a disorder to PROVE they had a disorder, and so she simply saw it as a plea for attention cuz tats what they ended up getting.
Dont get angry without bothering to enlighten someone :)
and when you do enlighten her or at least talk to her about it , dont get angry. Shes only NAIVE.
Although we have an epidemic of eating disorders, people don't understand the true motivations behind them. All they see is, "How superficial. Get over yourself and realize magazine models don't dictate your reality." Or maybe these people happened to know someone who tried to use a legitimate disorder to gain attention (the same which is sometimes done with 'cutting'). There are many who parade a recognized problem around to garner the attention they crave, regardless of whether or not they really have said disorder.
However, this approach makes those who REALLY have the problem look bad.
I'm not familiar with the generational or biological causes, but I am familiar with some environmental causes. It has been said that about 30% of people with eating disorders grew up in an abusive environment. When everything else is so out of control, one might try to control their weight or what goes into their body. That's one cause that gets overlooked.
It pains me when people say things like that about eating disorders and the people who have them.
What do you mean by generational here?:
Eatting disorders can be generational, like mine or biological, like mine again.
