Police unearth over 400 baby bones in India

Mon Feb 19, 1:23 PM ET

Police were investigating a hospital's involvement in illegal female feticide after 437 baby bones were dug up close by the complex, a state government said.

Police began unearthing the bones on Saturday from Christian Medical Hospital, in central Madhya Pradesh state, after a tip-off that medical staff were carrying out illegal abortions.

"Initial reports indicate feticide or infanticide," said state health minister Ajay Vishnoi.

"The bones and skulls were of fetuses or of very young children," the minister said.

A hospital superintendent and a cleaner were being questioned, said police superintendent Satish Saxena.

In August, police in northern Punjab state found 25 fetuses dumped in a well at a private medical clinic. Punjab has the worst gender ratio in India, with 798 girls for every thousand boys under the age of six.

Hundreds of thousands of unborn girls are killed each year in India, where families prize sons who are seen as breadwinners and required to light their parents' funeral pyres, according to Hindu practice.

A study by The Lancet, a British medical journal, said last year that India may have lost 10 million unborn girls in the past 20 years. Indian experts put the figure at about five million.

This is absolutely... chilling - I don't even know if I could come up with a proper word to describe this.

What really bothers me is that I'm sure this isn't the only place in the world that is so pro-male that things like this are happening. And yet, people will undoubtedly read this story and say that it is up to Indian official to figure it out and fix the gender equality issue.

can you really copy and paste an article like this then just make a short comment on it and call it good for a blog?

Hm, well, I guess it's just as good a blog as you would consider this embittered comment to be good?

We spend far too much time arguing over petty things, like should we allow Gay couples the same tax breaks and heir status that heterosexual couples get?

I can only read the same blogs over and over again.

And I could understand your bitterness if every single blog I wrote was as you describe, but clearly they are not.

This is so sad, but yes it does happen other places, hun. Look into China. I believe the have some sort of law about only having one child or something so they kill off the girls and keep the boys. You know what else India has done, at one point or another they were so concerned about over population that they sterilized something like 2 million men (not exact on the figures) but it was something like that. I wish the whole world would take our population situation more seriously, of course, that'll always lead to controversy because then you end up with things like this and china and it is a hard thing to handle. On a different note, the numbers are up around 600,000 - 700,000 for Iraqis dead now and over 3100 american troops, that is equally sad.

Actually, China was one place I was thinking about when I was writing; but then I kind of blanked and I started second-guessing myself and thought it was the wrong country. Thanks for clarifying this!

Yes, they used to have that law to reduce the population, but now are freaking out because there are so many boys (thousands, maybe millions?) to one girl, and are trying to urge raising females so their culture won't completely die out. Mail order brides, anyone?

Turns out family values means passing your family name along and having somebody to burn your corpse when you're dead. Stupid selfish bullshit. Killing girls so that you can see your family name on one more marriage certificate. Why not let women keep their names so it doesn't matter or value all of your children as worthy of your legacy?

Fuck it sickens me when people get so twisted up in shit like this. So much cultural bias against females that they are discarded. A woman is only as good as the rich, fat bastard she can get married off to at the youngest age possible.

I read a couple articles on the growing gender imbalance in China. THe discrepency is supposed to hit (tens of?)millions pretty soon.

It's scary seeing how, on such a scale, the pro-male attitude affects a country, because I know a country that has an even worse ratio - China. There, there are thousands of male children to every one female child. Though the Chinese government is trying to urge keeping female children, it's doubtful it will have much effect - it is embedded in their culture. I can't even imagine what you'd dig up there. This just chills me to the bone, that people - that medical professionals - could do something like that.

and to think that such compassionate religions have come these countries.
