Waffle House- Would you like silicone with that?

Waffle House is a place alot of people adore and love. As conversation goes in an interview or anywhere else, I hear the words that make my ears bleed. " I love Waffle House It's my favorite." I just smile and tell them why I didn't like it there. So I give them an offer they should not refuse. "You don't know what I know about their food." Alot of people have stated in utter terror not to ruin there wonderful food experience: "Please don't tell me about the food."
Well everyone you really want to know about the food and the people who are cooking your delicious hash browns.

I will first give some background and reasons why I know these things. I worked for Waffle house for 1 year and 3 months. It was my first job and it was the worst. It was mandantory to work Thanksgiving and Christmas day, or you would be fired. Since I was in my senior year doing Co-op I had to keep my job in order to only go a half day in school.

I was a server, or what they called a "sales person." and a cook. I was never trained to be a cook, but I had to learn in about a day. The cooks in the morning shift would not show up. The third shift cook would leave and say "Sorry I have to go." I never blamed them, but it was not fair to me. As a server, if the next shift server will be late you have to wait on them. This is normally the same with the cook. I acquired 3 stalkers while I worked there. This was not fun trying to hide from them.

So it was 7 in the morning and my first shift cook is not there. 6 tables start to fill up. I have to cook, so I cook, run and give a drink, flip the bacon, run over to another table greet them, take their order, and pretty much run around like I am a chicken with it's head cut off. If you have ever been into a busy Waffle House in the morning there is normally 2 servers and one or 2 cooks. I was doing all of their jobs. The screwed up thing was, the food looked brillant like I had been cooking there for years. No one complained but alot of the people really pissed me off by stiffing me.

All star specials are the special deal you get with 2 eggs, sasage or bacon, hashbrowns, and a waffle. You can get this deal anyway you want it. A family of 3 orders 3 all star specials totaling 6 eggs,3 hashbrown smothered, covered, and everything else they could fit into their mouths. I get their drinks. I cook and wait on other tables, and still get their food out to them quick. They threw their garbage everywhere and left no tip besides the mess.

Now that you have had background here is some facts. The majority of people I worked with was a women child molester, people who have been in prison and let out just to work, and people who are drug addicts. The people who are cooking your food could be high because they don't drug test. But there are good people who work there also who can't find a job after getting a degree. Even if a cook works there 20 years the highest they can make is 9 dollars an hour. Waffle House will hire ANYONE. And Waffle House's Owner Tim Howard (at least the Waffle house's here) was the greediest, biggest prick I have ever meet.

I was getting ready to cook one day and grabbed the huge can of what they call "Lo-melt" I opened up the can and it was solid. I knew I had to let it heat up but it looked nasty. I thought well maybe it is butter. I have a tendancy to look at ingredients often, I believe in fact, it is an obsession. So I turned the can over and read the ingredients. There was water...hmm that sounds fine.....butter flavoring...still fine....then silicone. I stopped and looked back because I thought my eyes had decieved me. Silicone? This is what I cook eggs, hashbrowns, omlets, and pretty much everything with. I started to encourage customers to have their food made with butter instead of the "lo-melt" but no one listened.

A nasty guy on third shift used to rub his feet and then go cook people's food without washing his hands. If you still like to eat at Waffle House make sure you see the cook wash their hands.
Also ask for plastic utensils. Please trust me on this. As a server i had to wash dishes. I washed them well but the silverware is a different story. They won't let you wash it by hand, so you throw it all in a tub full of soapy water. Then after 5 or more minutes you put it in a tray and run it throw the machine. The machine gets hot but I don't think it will take the germs off.
When you go into a Waffle House look around and inspect it. Look near the grill by the floor. If you see any puddle that is dark in color the place is not clean.
Next to the grill is metal cabinets where they keep waffle mix. They are open containers and they sometimes keep them for the next day.
Unlike everyone else I sanitaized the tables with stuff that kills germs. What the rest of the people do is wipe it off with a warm rag they have been using all day.
Don't get orange juice there. The machine is supposed to be cleaned weekly but it didn't get done for many months.
Best time to go is between shifts. In the morning it is best to go at 7 and or around 1:30 in the afternoon. The reason is this is normally when they are suppose to clean the grill. It is worth waiting an extra 10 minutes to eat on a clean grill rather than one that has been used all day. Ask for package syrup, sometimes they use the same syrup for days.
The meat is in a cooler. it is not very sanitary. I have seen colored meat before.
I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did! Happy eating!

Well, we don't have those here in California BUT if I am ever somewhere where there is a Waffle House, I will avoid it. I wish that the FDA were more aware of problems in America's restaurants. I don't think about it most of the time because it scares me. A lot!

My sister worked at a Waffle House in our small town for years and shared similar stories. I would eat there sometimes and she would make me change my order if she knew some inside information. I always liked to get soup, but she made me get something else if the soup was old. The big controversy came when the Huddle House moved in. Seems to be cleaner, but they don't have southern biscuits...

But it's the same story everywhere. Any restaurant that serves a lot of people fast will have similar problems. And a restaurant that pays so little will not get workers who care about the conditions of the kitchen. Disrespect breeds disrespect.

Hmm. I'm hungry now. Not.

Sounds like you had quite the unpleasant experience in Waffle House. I've heard bad things about them before. Y'know, unsanitary stuff, but nothing like what you were describing. I have yet to go to a Waffle House. I think I'll continue not breaking this record.

Well I use to like going there because sometimes I want a good waffle. Thank God there is frozen from the store. I think I will stick to Stake N Shake. Trust me we have all had out "bad jobs", but remember this. You were looking for a job when you started the job and you will be looking for a job when you leave the job.

I left that place in 2006 Because I didn't want to work during christmas. But I see your point. I work at Target now. i don't like it either but I have to have money so i have to stay. Waffle's should be fine to eat there, but you are better off to buy frozen ones to save money. I can't even look at another waffle. The word makes me ill.

I have never been to a Waffle House and after reading this, I am completely relieved at NOT having the opportunity to eat there!

I read this and it was like having a flash back. I just left Waffle House in April and had a VERY similar experience. I decided that after working there for a little under a year it was time for me to go out and find a job where I didn't have to think about bringing a gun with me. My schedule for Christmas was like this Christmas Eve I went in at 2pm and worked till 2am, drove home, 40 minutes away, took a shower, a 3 hour nap, got up, went back to work at 7am Christmas morning and worked till 7am the next morning... Not to mention that I had to go back to my regular 3rd shift that night. I have never heard of a job with mandatory overtime that wasn't working for the state or something. They tried to do the same thing to my for New Years Eve and New Years Day, but I called in. They told me that the reason why I was scheduled like that was because I am younger then everyone else and don't have children.
I should have known what I was in for, because two days after I started working there a shift manager walked up to me and said "So, what is your story?" Being naive to the situation I asked what he meant. The conversation goes like this...
    "Well do you have kids?"
    "No."
"Did you just get out of jail?"
    "No..."
"You don't do drugs or anything?"
    "Nope."
"Well then why the hell are you working here?!"
If I was smart I would have run out the door with my tail between my legs at that moment, but instead I stayed. One week later the 2am girl leaves and my cook walks out on me cause he can't handle the crowd. I am standing there on hump day cooking for "Ladies Get In Free." I call the manager and he tells me that he will be right there... Since it is Waffle House I ran the store alone till 6am.
After working there for about 6 months the manager gets reliant on you and how responsible you are in comparison to the other workers. Unfortunately since I have bad credit I can't be a manager so they just give me all the responsibilities and continue to pay me 3.25 an hour. I finally quit on a Friday night when they left me with a cook that would turn around and burn me every 15 minutes and a trainee that hadn't even gone through first shift orientation. The poor kid didn't even know how to write a ticket let alone call out orders.
After my job at Waffle House any job I got was like a breeze. Yeah, I have to work, but at least I don't have to leave my dignity at home when I go to my other job. People think that since you work at Waffle House you are most likely high on crystal meth when you are serving them, so they treat you like garbage. Older people give you the stink eye when they come in at 2am and your eyes are bloodshot... Not from smoking a joint in the parking lot with the rest of the staff, but because between work, school and the sun shining in your window when you are trying to sleep, you are averaging about a 3 hour nap every 24 hours.
My sister is 17 now and looking for her first real job. She was talking about going to Waffle House. I told her that unless she plans on giving her entire life to a job that is going to take her nowhere she shouldn't do it. Since I have quit I can't even go into a Waffle House with friends, I can't go to clubs cause I hate drunk people, and I have had to change my phone number because the manager has no problem giving your number to any crack head that calls up and asks for it.
Waffle House needs to be really looked into by the Better Business Bureau because in my opinion there is no way that all the stuff that they do it legal.

I had to have a job for co-op and it was the only job I could get. It sounds like you went through hell as well. It is really nice to find someone who is a normal person who worked there. I worked with alot of half way house people, murders, and child molesters. Plus alot of drama started. My personal life was affected greatly because I would talk to people then it would get around to everyone and then people who thought they knew my boyfriend would make up these stories about him. It was hell.

They wouldn't allow me to work that much overtime because at the time I was 17. Plus they didn't want to pay me that much. The only thing I liked was that I had a set scudule (sp) the way i wanted. Honestly if I was starving to death I really don't think I could go back there. I would rather be shoot in the head then go back to that hell hole.

Thanks for the comment. I am glad someone shared a similar experience...
