Fear has shrouded America as the shadow of night shrouds the Earth. We are afraid. You may not think so, but deep in your heart, you are most likely afraid. You fear gangsters in New York, the killers in Chicago, or the school shooters from all over. In this blog, the first of two, I will talk about weapons and why the public should be able to carry them. In this first blog, I will discuss the old and modern uses of weapons, some facts about people, and personal experiences with the deadly weapons that I've had myself.
Unfortunately, there is no easy fix to these fears, but there is a way to ease the pain of that fear. As an Eagle Scout, I carry around my pocket knife wherever I go. Yes, it isn't a machete, but it isn't dull either. I don't keep it for death, but rather, for protection and the sheer convience of the tool most would call a deadly weapon. I am like 99% of America, incapable of killing people because I want too. Believe it or not, 99% of people cannot kill on a whim, or if they do, they will NEVER do it again. In fact, most people have a hard time killing even when their lives are in danger. This may be a simple (well not really, it a leatherman multitool) pocket knife, but the same can be said for ANY deadly weapon.
When you think about it, everything in the world has two sides to it. Good, and evil. You cannot avoid this fact, and I'll even show proof of it. As stated in the last paragraph, I carry a sharp multitool with me everywhere (except school of course). I use it as a tool, to help loosen some line here, or cut a box open there. Now, take the same device, and think of something evil. Not hard is it? I bet the first things in your mind where knife, stab in the dark, cutting, and slicing. Yes, it's true I can use this tool for that, but if EVERYONE carried one, and only one or two people used them for evil out of every 1000 people, what are the odds of them succeeding?
Now, onto the bigger fish. I have a friend (much older than I, and a vet) that carries a pistol with him anytime he goes somewhere in his truck. He keeps it concealed, but would NEVER use it to harm someone unless absolutely necessary. It's a concealed weapon, and it's a pistol, but it's not doing anything. When it comes to guns, most people are touchy, but honestly, it's the same situation as the pocket knife, only a little more firepower.
The gun has the power to kill in one shot. It has the power to kill many in a VERY short amount of time. It even has the power to cause explosions and kill even MORE people indirectly. But, for that same gun, it can be used to halt the single shot. Save a single life, or many. And, a gun need not always take a life. Disabling is the way taught of the old martial arts, why not apply that to today's gun training?
This is not to say that a knife and a gun should smell of flowers or be the prettiest objects in the world. They are weapons, capable of taking ANY life with a single motion. They were designed to kill, no matter how you dress it up. The original purpose of most tools used in scouts, were originally designed as weapons. Now, see what good they do for your children? They teach them lessons they will need for life. They teach them to be independent, how to care for a single life BECAUSE they can take a life with one motion.
My point is, weapons should not be withheld from the public. Concealing is a problem, but I gurantee you will feel safer if you have a concealed weapon and you don't know if the person two aisles does or doesn't. Weapons do just as much good as they do harm, and the United States Government should see that.
Sincerely,
