C.S. Lewis' Intentions

Well, I was just reading the old narnia blog by marabeth, and was quite intrigued by the argument over whether or not C.S. Lewis intended The Chronicles of Narnia to be Christian. Firstly, the parralells to christianity are pretty obvious in all the Narnia books, and knowing anything about the man tells me that he did intend them as Christian. Reading his other books, such as Screwtape Letters, The Great Divorce, Mere Christianity, The Problem of Pain, Grief Observed, etc... it is obvious he was a "christianizer". I believe the quote that may be used to combat the idea that Lewis intended Narnia to be Christian would be this one,

“Some people seem to think that I began by asking myself how I could say something about Christianity to children; then fixed on the fairy tale as an instrument, then collected information about child psychology and decided what age group I’d write for; then drew up a list of basic Christian truths and hammered out ‘allegories’ to embody them. This is all pure moonshine. I couldn’t write in that way. It all began with images; a faun carrying an umbrella, a queen on a sledge, a magnificent lion. At first there wasn’t anything Christian about them; that element pushed itself in of its own accord.” - C.S. Lewis Of Other Worlds

What C.S. Lewis is saying is, He didn't set out to convert the kiddies using a fairy tale about Christ. But is obvious he was such a true believer, that even unintentionally, Christianity shone through even in his fairy tale. But to say it was all unitentional would be silly. I believe it would likely be more accurate to say that Lewis noticed some similarites between Aslan and Christ (or some other aspect of the story), intensified them, and created a masterpiece of childrens literature. That's all I had to say.

I knew that C.S, Lewis was Christian, but I never knew he used his classic fairy tales to mimic christian stories. Now that I look back, I see it more and more recalling the stories. Interesting blog and informative.
