College or bust?

I am having trouble understanding at times what college is anymore and its importance. I mean I know it's supposed to prepare you for your future, but is it in ways only a pit-stop. I have been reading more and more information on how if you go into anything relating to business as long as you graduate, it really doesn't matter. You can basically advance and move around into any field. A scary thought since you worked hard to get a degree and could stand to lose your job or have someone take it that has no certification in the field you are in. It's just frustrating.
This makes you wonder if you need college to advance yourself at all.
Then it doesn't help that reality shows make college out to be one big party. If it was only that why would we go? I can find enough parties to attend without needing college to do that. I want the college experience and am all for it, but it just sucks when it's only portrayed as something to party at. I don't know maybe this contributes to the whole cheating thing, because you have very little time to actually study what with the extensive partying. You never really hear anything good on TV about college, only the bad or sports related.
I mean I know those aren't the only things college are good for. It's just something to think about. When you can go into anything and in essence advance into management or further yourself. This is promising and great at the same time as it's dismaying. i guess I look at it as I am going to college for four years to learn things and to better myself, yet is this going to work for me, or is everyone going to be at an equal playing ground no matter what?
College is a good experience, it's just bothersome when you hear stuff like this. It just makes you think do I need college to do this, or could I possibly do this on my own. You know in the back of your head that you need it to get a good job, but then stuff like that happens. So does it pay to have a college education, or to just work your way up from scratch or from a two year institution rather than a four?

My parents are recruiters for companies like Colgate and Paramount Pictures and they don't look at anyone who doesn't have a college degree.
My friend has a job grating diamonds. Even though many people have the same job without having a college degree, she has a higher salary.
College definitely has its financial benefits. :]
But it's an experience to grow and learn in a new environment.

Yeah, I know about these cases. But my boyfriend's brother is making the same pay and has the same job as my boyfriend was going to college for with only an accounting degree. His other brother said that he didn't care what the person majored in as long as they had a degree because everything could be taught later.
It just was a different thought and in ways it kind of freaked me out. it's good to know people look for a college education though.

It depends on what you want to do, career-wise. Most jobs don't accept people without some kind of degree. Also, most jobs pay more to people with higher degrees. You don't need a degree to get a job but if you want a job that pays enough to support yourself and maybe a family, then a degree is what you need. The higher, the better.

yea usually..

The only use I found for business school is banking. Someone with the skill of trade doesn't need a degree to sell t-shirts. A funny movie to portray this is Rodney Dangerfield Goes to School. His marketing slogan was "In order to feel thin, just stand around a bunch of fat people." That was gut-splitting

Also, as for engineering, a friend of a friend does work on the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville. He's been building since he was little with his dad. Though eventually he "needed" a degree. All that was taught in Tech was the same as what he learned. I'm learning to repair computers with my dad without A+ certification, although that would help certify things. Just like Jesus didn't need a building degree or "environmental conservation" course to build wood tables. The tools are out there. Some can be taught with an internship or apprenticeship if you think college is a waste of time.
