Senior Rights

Ocean Lakes high school, a grand bastion of academic prowess and equality; but is this the way a high school is supposed to operate? The freshmen, students who have been in this school for so short a period of time that they’re still looking for the stairway to the 3rd floor pool get the same rights and privileges as the senior class, who HAS found that stairway to the 3rd floor, though sadly it leads not to a pool, but to the roof. This is not the way it is supposed to be, the senior class in Ocean Lakes should be granted more rights then we have in the past because we have worked hard for the past 3 years to get here, and we deserve a break during our final year. Seniors should be able to one, leave classes 5 minutes earlier then the rest of the school, and two, get an officially recognized school skip day.

I believe that seniors should get 5 minutes off from each class to make our way towards our next class because we have matured more then the other classes, and are therefore less likely to waste that time and still get to class late. I also think that it’s not fair that lost freshmen should impede the way of seniors all year long, keeping them from socializing with their friends and getting to class on time. This also lets the seniors catch their breath a bit more after each class, as some of us are overloading ourselves with ridiculous AP classes to get ready for college, or get that last few GPA points to become valedictorian.

I also think that seniors should get an officially recognized school skip day because if it came at the end of the year, there is little that would get lost during that day. By that time in the year, the colleges have already made their choices, and missing one day of school would have a minimal if not nonexistent impact upon their choices. It would also give the seniors a day to take a break off from school to relish in their 4 years of hard work completed, and recharge themselves for those last few weeks before they’re officially done with high school, therefore cutting the rate of burnout students in the senior class at the end of the year.

It is obvious that things have changed in America towards the premise of equality, and while this is not necessarily a bad thing, there are some areas where it is. The senior class should be given extra privileges simply because we are the senior class. The above extra rights would not in any way adversely effect the learning curve or the senior class, or school, and it would give seniors a chance to feel special during their senior year, as well as give them a few more much needed breaks during their final year in Ocean Lakes.
