Scholarship Points:
So this scholarship competition/challenge is based entirely on a points system that logs the number of blog posts, reads, and comments. Since this is a progressive blogging page that is intended for our own improvement I feel that it would be helpful if we could see how many points we have accumulated. Granted the progressive blogging is not meant to be entirely for points, but for those of us participating in the scholarship program, it would be nice to know where you stand. Part of making progress is knowing where you stand and how you can improve. Therefore it would be beneficial to us to have a system that would show us our scores as they change instead of the progressiveu post with the top 25 every so often. It should not be too entirely difficult to set up an algorythem so that the top 25 scholarship participants would be updated with changing points. If you have any opinions on whether or not this is a good idea, please respond and have some friends read this and do the same. Maybe if it is a big enough idea they might consider looking into it. Thanks.

Apparently it's not going to happen, which I personally find quite odd. Surely it can't be that difficult.
Yeah, I don't know. I personally don't know the programming that it would take but the math shouldn't be too difficult at all.

I don't know...I don't think that it would be a very good idea.
I mean, maybe we could know a little bit more frequently, but if it's updated like every day, then people who are way down there may just drop out.
I'd keep blogging on here if I had no chance of winning (which is most definitely the case anyway :), and I think that that is the general consensus.
If people find it fun, why replace that with more ranking, more competition? I like the people on this site and I like that we're blogging for progress (not just for points).
Whoever does win this scholarship: rock on!
If we know every day who the top 25 are, won't we just get more competitive with them? I don't know--but that just takes all of the fun and "progress" out of it for me.
But I'm not a very competitive person. Maybe some of you are, and it would be important to you.
They might try something like an optional notification of the top 25 or something. Whoever wants to see it can sign up, and then they e-mail it to you.

Good point and I agree that it is somewhat controversial that it may create blogging for points. Maybe a weekly update would be better. There's a line between balancing a motivation to do better and just leading to random posts.

I don't know that I like the idea of posting everyone's points. We already have a lot of complaints that people are just here for the scholarship (as though that were a bad thing).
But I do think it would help motivate some of us if maybe we were sent an email once a month or so that told us our statistics, like how many points we've accumulated thus far, how many comments we've made, how many blogs we've posted, and how many total reads we've received. Maybe even an average rating and the total number of rates? But it should be sent to our emails, not posted publicly.
Then, if you feel the need to share your points totals, it's on the user.

I like that. I mean I don't really care about who I'm ahead of or not ahead of or whatever. It would just be nice to know a number ranking. We don't need names, just something to let us know if we're even in the running at all. And I mean yeah we don't want people just for the scholarship I guess but I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. I mean I joined just for the scholarship, but if you're going to win and if people are really going to read your posts then there has to be something substantial anyway. Otherwise nobody else will care about helping you win by reading posts that don't say anything. E-mail would be great though and it would still protect the privacy of those who don't want it to be public.

I am a little curious about how many points I have but ny guess is that they want us to interact and get involved for other reasons other than the scholarship. Maybe they want us to gain a true interest in reading other people's ideas and sharing ours. I agree that we should be send a private post once a week to let us know where we stand as far as our points are concerned. I mean, what if we aren't receiving all of our points for some reason. We should know so that we can report it and they could fix it! It could be a technical problem or something where our points are not tallying up correctly.

If there is a competition taking place, wouldn't the quality of the posts go down? It's like when you have to write a poem for school, but you write poetry on your free time. When you HAVE to do something that you usually do for fun, the quality sometimes go down because you aren't overwhelmed by emotions or something like that. Do you get what I'm saying? By posting up points of the winners don't you think that many people will become intimidated by the people who are only here for the scholarships and lose interest all together?

Yeah, I think an e-mail with our personal progress would be a good addition.

I think that is a really good idea too. But I do agree about not pointing everyone's individual points on it. I think it would cause ugly fights.
if they did that, people would just be posting comments just to get points.
