what is the public school systems coming to these days??? i don't know about other towns or school districts but the district where i live has this new super intendon for the grade schools and she is slowing burrying the schools. right now they have elementary schools starting at 8 and going until 3:30 like normal but then the middle schools are starting at 9 and going until 4 and the high school starts at 7:50 or something like that and goes until 3. yeah this doesn't kill anyone but it is a proven fact that high school aged students perform better later in the day and elementary and middle school students perform better in the earlier hours of the day. so why this schedule?
not only is the schedule scewy with the start and end times but students are now required to sit in class longer. elementary students are losing their valued recess and lunch hours that allow them to get rid of all the energy that they store up during the day and by the time they get home it is time to do homework, eat dinner, and then go to bed. when do they get to let all of this built up energy out. middle school and high school students have shorter lunch hours, barely any school dances, and classes are close to 2 hours long! yes some may say that this is a good thing and that they are learning more this way but if its all work and there is no relaxation or time for socializing then students begin to lose focus and start socializing when they should be learning. they begin to not be able to concentrate in class and their grades go down and so do their overall knowledge. from my understanding school is not only supposed to teach you about book smarts but it is also supposed to teach you how to handle being around your peers and learning to socialize. if there is not down time or time to socialize and play then when are the students learning these qualities that are needed for everyday life????
the logic of the district board is unreal to me! it is uncanny how stupid they are being. those who don't want to learn aren't going to decide to learn if they are forced to be there longer with less social time. its ridiculous. the drop out rate seems to be raising and the qualitiy of education is going down the toilet to put it lightly.

It is utterly ridiculous .High School is a time for personal growth as well as learning the books. school just don't seem to get it.

In Europe, students go to school until around one and they have an hour for lunch. Some schools still have school on Saturdays, but many are turning away from that. Still, this pattern is much more beneficial.
I agree with the 2-hour classes being too long...I'm in college so my "job" is going to school and learning, but I can't keep my concentration that long! It's almost overkill to make someone sit there and listen to a teacher go on and on and on about chemical reactions or past participles or whatever. I did have a few classes in high school that flew by even though they were 90 minutes long...that had more to do with the teachers being dynamic and breaking the class period up into segments (lecture/taking notes, time to work on homework and ask questions about it, trivia games, lab exercises, etc.). I don't think I would've made it through physics if our teacher didn't do things like that!
My only thought for this post is---
Maybe if people graduated from school with the ability to type full sentences using proper grammer, pronunciation, spelling and capitalization, we wouldn't need to lengthen a day or mess with the "normal" schedules. People are also graduating from school not knowing how to speak properly. People are not able to count properly or do basic math. Heaven forbid if the power were to go out and the cashier had to use brains to calculate how much change to give someone! Most modern technology is made outside of our country in places like Japan, because our people with high school diplomas and college degrees can't perform basic "reading, writing and 'rithmatic".
I personally call for a longer school year and more grade years (14 in some countries) to help take care of some of our basic problems. I guess I should end and maybe use this as a possible rant for a blog sometime. Have a great day!
The main reason nobody knows these things anymore is because they aren't taught. They teach us only what we need to know for the tests (mainly the standardized ones), and forget about everything else. Even when I was going to the best school in the state, I still never learned a single thing about grammar. The only reason I know proper grammar would be my obsessive reading as a young child. I read constantly (and still do, when I have the time), and most of the books I read were older or about the past, written with proper grammar, and with the adult characters correcting the grammar of the younger characters frequently. The latter I found most frequently in the Little House and Rocky Ridge books, which I was obsessed with for most of my elementary school years. As for math...Not my strong point, except for percents, decimals, and fractions. I was great at those, thanks in part to a very good tutor I had in fifth grade, and I often would get those assignments done early in class and help other students who were struggling, because the teacher didn't have the time to help everyone. However, once out of fourth grade, I never saw a single basic math problem in class. Forget the times tables, let's just do algebra! If we're not taught what we need to learn, being in school longer isn't going to help us learn it. Rather, we'll learn more of the useless things that we're being taught now, and even fewer things that we do need. My uncle fully understood and was capable of using the word "arbitrary" in second grade. In third grade, his teacher saw him reading the dictionary, and asked why. His reply was, "I like it. The plot's a little thin, but the vocabulary's pretty good." How many children today can make claims like that? Zero, because they're not taught anything.
i totally agree that something needs to be done to get students to graduate with a better knowledge of the basic reading, writing, and aritmatic skills but maybe if the school systems would stop passing kids that didn't deserve to pass and stopped making it so easy for them to get by without learning how to do these things then we wouldn't need the longer school hours. im in college now and i'm getting ready to have a child and i would much rather that child go to a private school that taught students what they needed to know but still gave them their personal time. as long as they up the curriculum and say you either learn this or stay here then people would begin to learn what is needed to learn to survive in the "real" world.
If the power went out, the transaction could not be completed. It wouldn't matter if the cashier could calculate the change or not. If the register can't function, the transaction cannot take place. End of story.

There's a problem if you're working at a store that you can't use the registers if the power goes out.
All stores I've ever worked at or been associated with have hand-receipts to use and a key to get into the reg. drawer so you have change for people.

Well, I work at the mall, and those just aren't options. Only the manager has a key to the drawer, and since most people pay with credit cards or checks, we really can't do anything. The power actually went out in the entire mall once (and most of the surrounding area - construction workers accidentally cut a powerline) and people were pissed that they couldn't pay for their stuff and had to just leave. Apparently, it was amusing, but since I didn't come in until later that day (after the power was back on), I didn't experience that firsthand.

That seems really strange.

We did hand written receipts without power when I was in the mall.

Hence the hand-written receipts. Take it now, run it later.

I'd be pissed, too! But mostly because I think it's ridiculous that a company wouldn't have a back-up plan in case the power did go out.
Obviously I'm not saying anything against you. You don't run the company, you just get their paycheck.
But I don't understand how a company who doesn't have a back-up plan even functions. Doesn't make sense to me.
What if there's a fire? Is there a plan for that? What about if a pipe bursts and the store floods? If the heaters stop working?
There's always been a protocol for all those things at all the places I've worked. And the protocol always includes "...if the power goes out..." and it never says "kick everybody out... we've lost the sale."
Companies are built to make money. They're losing money if they're sending people away when the power goes out.
Just sayin'.

Well, my company's more worried about people screwing us over than coming up with backup plans. I honestly know zero evacuation plans, have no clue what we're supposed to do in a tornado, etc. Given, I could use my brain and figure it out, but it's never mentioned. During training, we only learn return policies, how to run the register, and how to open credit cards. They're honestly more worried about employess stealing than they are about customers, so every policy we have is ridiculous and makes no sense, even to us.

Wow, that does suck.
It's strange that nothing bad has happened yet....
The company should learn that it makes more money off of treating people well than it loses through scams :-/
Sorry your company doesn't care about anyone :(
I do love your shopping tips... most of them are so true. lol.

Well, just this weekend, I had a customer get mad at me because I wouldn't take her credit card number over the phone so she could pay for an item and have it shipped to her. We CAN ship items, but you have to pay in a store (if the store you're at doesn't have it, they can call one that does and get the sku, then apply the shipping charge and have it sent). Her complaint was that she lived three hours away from the nearest store and that it's not online. Well...it's a $50 easter dress for a little girl...find something cheaper a little closer to home.

lol I've had people get upset at that before at my store, too. Ha.
Retail is so fun to complain about. Just yesterday I took like 20 minutes of Nick's time whining about the lady who brought up that something was "Priced as Marked" but still wanted 50% off of that because there was a sign next to it that said 50% off. Ha. :))

The habit people have of assuming that everything in the general vicinity of a sign is on sale just confuses and occasionally amuses me.

All I can say is i See your point. Longer days and shortened lunches arent a good thing I know I have no time to eat lunch at school cause by time i stand in line buy my lunch the bell rings for us to go to class so i usually just get something quick to eat a snack.
