Becoming a Marine Corps officer is not something to be taken lightly. For one it is one of the world’s most dangerous jobs; it is also one of the most demanding. However, the Marine Corps also holds the promise of being one of the most fulfilling jobs anyone could ever have. My reasons for wanting to join the Marine Corps are simple, for one I feel the sense of responsibility for the defense of the greatest nation on earth. Secondly, I have a longing to be part of something bigger then myself, something that I will always have great pride to say I was a part of.
First off, it goes without saying that we all live in a time not characterized by a stare down between two giants, but in a desperate scramble between a giant and hundreds if not thousands of smaller snakes. In times like this it takes great character to step up to the challenge and do battle with the countless sects of terror that threaten to destroy the very framework that this nation was built upon. I have grown up my entire life without fear of being terrorized by those who declare the United States their enemy, and I owe that to the men and women of our armed forces, and specifically, to those in the Marine Corps. I feel that it is my duties to serve not only those that have already served, but those who are yet to come by joining the Marine Corps. Through this I can repay those before my by keeping those of the future safe from the terror that awaits at the doors of freedom, ready at any moment to tear it down and destroy all that our nation stands for.
Secondly I have a tendency to gravitate towards things that are bigger then me, things that help those around me, and things that help protect what I hold dear. From being an Eagle Scout, to being varsity tennis captain I am a born leader, and I always want to be part of the next thing that’s bigger then what one person could ever achieve. In this respect the Marine Corps is a dream come true. Not only would I become an officer, a leader after ROTC, but I would also be part of the most impressive organization and military fighting force in the world. The pride that would be generated by being a part of this force for my entire life would be more then I would have if I was a part of anything else at all.
