700 Mile Fence--2100 Mile Border. Do they really think we're this dumb?

Do they realy think we are this dumb?  As election year ploys go-this ones for the books. Desperately trying to cling to control of one of the houses of Congress; the Republican controlled Congress passed an immigration bill that was signed into law by President Bush.  This bill calls for the creation of a 700 mile fence along the Mexican, US border to prevent illegal immigration.

Whether you believe in tightening the border, amnesty or whatever other solutions have been proposed--this bill clearly doesn't address any of the issues.  If we're going to build a wall to keep out immigrants; why only 700 miles?  The Mexican border streches for 2100 miles.  illegal immigrants have shown themselves to be quite resourceful in coming into the US now--wouldn't they just walk around the wall?

Furthermore, the bill does not provide funding for this wall either--the bill stuipulates that local juristdictions will need to pay for it.  I understand Republicans believe in small government--but if illegal immigration and this 700 mile fence were national security concerns-why are they abdicating responsibility to finance it and build it.  If its not important enougfh to finance then logically its not really neccesary for our defense--unless once again the Federal Government is failing at protecting its citizens (as with Katrina).

Meg is a fun killer's picture

It is definitely the evident flaw in the master plan. Who is going to pay for it? Who is going to build it? "Everyone" wants this border fence, but no one wants to pay for it. "Everyone" wants this border fence, but no one wants to build it. In the United States, who does the jobs that no one wants? The illegal immigrants. Do you really think they are going to build a wall to keep themselves out? It is ridiculous!

I admit illegal immigration is a definite problem in the United States, but building a wall is not the way to handle it. I say stricter rules on employers is the way to handle it. If employers are forced to pay illegal immigrants the same wage as citizens, that would do either one of two things: 1.) The illegals would be encourage to apply for citizenship in order to get hired, and 2.) Employers would be encouraged to hire citizens rather than illegals since they can no longer pay substandard wages for labor.

The wall is a dumb idea anyway; no one wants to put in the effort to build it, and no one wants to pay for it.
